Understand the eye care needed as you age
As we get older, it is more common for us to wear glasses. There is no formula for when and if this will happen, but the need to correct vision tends to appear for many people over the age of 40.
One explanation for the phenomenon is a condition called presbyopia, which usually affects people over the age of 40, who complain of the need for the famous reading glasses.
Presbyopia
Presbyopia, also called “tired vision,” makes it difficult to focus on nearby objects, as he explains Earth the ophthalmologist specializing in refractive surgery, Doctor Tiago César:
“As we age, the goal [uma espécie de lente que fica atrás da pupila] it may become less flexible. Tear production may decrease and the retina may be affected by several conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration. This can lead to vision problems or conditions such as presbyopia, cataracts and other eye diseases,” says the doctor.
The specialist warns of the importance of maintaining preventive eye care.
Tips for keeping your eyes healthy
The doctor says that you need to undergo regular eye exams to monitor your eye health. Additionally, patients should protect their eyes from ultraviolet (UV) radiation by wearing appropriate sunglasses.
A balanced diet rich in nutrients such as omega-3, vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc can also help maintain eye health. “Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol and tobacco, as both can negatively affect eye health,” recommends the ophthalmologist.
And in moments when we can’t take our eyes off the computer or cell phone, it’s important to remember that excessive exposure can be harmful to the eyes. The expert recommends “reducing screen time and following the 20-20-20 rule: for every 20 minutes of screen time, look at something 20 feet away (about 6 meters) for 20 seconds to relax the ocular muscles”.
