The pandemic has changed some behaviors due to restrictions on social distancing, especially in the lives of singles. One of these changes was related to sex. If sexting was common before, sexting has intensified even more in the pandemic. According to a survey commissioned by Omens, a health brokerage platform dedicated to men, in collaboration with Happn, a dating app, 44% of Brazilians see virtual sex as something common in your sex life.

Still in this context, 26% do it only with a permanent partner, in whom they have a serious relationship. The rate of respondents who consider sexting to be common is higher among men (48%) than among women (40%) and among homosexuals (69%).

Real relationships vs. virtual

There is a lot of discussion about the influence of virtual sex in real life. For 50% of Brazilians surveyed, virtual sex has a positive or negative impact on real sex life. 29% said that sexting or another form of virtual sex ends up having a negative impact on the relationship. for generating a lack of interest in actual practice.

Another 21% believe that virtual sex positively affects real sex life, as it can act as a catalyst for arousal and interest in the other person. 34% rated that virtual sex has no impact on real sex life and 15% did not express an opinion on the subject.

The influence of virtuality on people’s lives is a concrete reality. With this, the virtual composes sexuality, opening up possibilities to explore sexual pleasure in new ways. In this sense, the positive or negative effects of sexting will depend on whether this resource is used, ethically or not, ”assesses Francis Kich, a psychologist specializing in sexuality at Omens.

Francesco also points out possible signs of negative effects of sexting: “A warning sign is the total replacement of face-to-face sexual practices with virtual ones. Inhibitions, shame, anxieties, and low self-esteem are just a few of the many reasons that can lead some people to use social media for not making personal contacts. In this sense, the use of sexting, while having many positive aspects, can become harmful when it is the only way to experience sexuality. Social losses, such as missing appointments or compromising important areas of life, as well as entering a cyclical process that generates suffering, can also be signs that these practices are harmful ”.

Is virtual sex already a routine among Brazilians?

According to the research, not exactly. Although 44% of respondents consider virtual sex to be normal, 39% still consider sexting to be unusual in their sex life. Of these, 30% are not interested in doing so.

“There are risks associated with violation of privacy, as an intentional disclosure / sharing of nudes. We can follow the principles of safety, consent and health. Security in relation to the sexual relationship for which these contents are intended, as a girlfriend or trusted partner. Do not show parts of the body (face, tattoo, piercing) that can be identified, “says Kich.” Consent has to do with the willingness and receptivity of the recipient to receive. Here it is worth asking: Would they like to receive my If not, do not insist, because what was a joke that they both enjoyed can turn into something boring and often sick, bordering on harassment “.
