Today (24) is the day of Santa Sara Kali, patron saint of the gypsy people. Find out more about the Saint who saved Mary and who is revered throughout the world
“Above the sky, below the earth and in between the gypsiesSaint Sara Kali – or the black woman who crossed the sea – felt the weight of the chains of slavery and ignorance of men on her skin. She has healed wounds, she has freed hearts and her blue scarf covers all those who suffer – children, pregnant women and men. Today she is praised by all, but it was through the gypsies that she found a place in all the nations.
Who was Saint Sara Kali?
There are many stories about Saint Sara Kali, who received this name because she was “black Kali”. There are no official documents about her, but legends say that she was a servant of Mary Magdalene and Mary. In others, they say that Sara Kali helped in the birth of Jesus Christ and was present at his crucifixion. Some authors, such as Dan Brown (The Da Vinci Code), claim that Sarah was the daughter of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene, but there is nothing to prove these speculations.
The promise and the best-known story
The best-known story tells that Sarah was the slave of Joseph of Arimathea. In the territory where Israel is today there was persecution of Christians. And that together with Maria Salomé, Maria Maddalena and Maria Cleopas, Santa Sara Kali was cast adrift in the Mediterranean Sea, without supplies. With them was the Holy Grail and in an act of desperation Sara promised God that if they survived she would never remove her veil again, as the act of hiding one’s hair indicates respect and purity. The request was granted and the Três Maria and Sara Kali arrived safely in Saintes Marie de La Mer, a city in the south of France, on May 24.
Santa Sara and the gypsies
The story continues: as soon as they arrived in the French city, the Three Marys were immediately saved by the people, while Sara remained behind because she was black.
It was the gypsies, who at the time lived hidden and on the margins of society, who sympathized with Sara and, thus, saved the woman who would later become their patron saint. She was venerated for a long time and, according to some, the gypsies prayed to the Saint after her death, asking for fertility, since for the clan, the arrival of new children was very important to continue the family, as a gypsy had many children he would have been very lucky. Others also say that there is a very strong connection between Sara and the gypsies, as both were persecuted, as well as living nomadically around the world. For her and for the promise made to God, the scarf has become an indispensable accessory in culture and tradition.
The arrival of Santa Sara and the Gypsies in Brazil
The Gypsy people have been heavily persecuted throughout history and even today we hear slander against this ethnic group. With the Church persecuting gypsies, many emigrated around the world and were even forced to be sent to the new colony of Portugal, which helped popularize Brazil. Therefore, our culture has a large part of the Gypsy tradition, since there are, to this day, scattered communities in the North-East, Central-West and South-East. Furthermore, our approach to Oracles and everything associated with fortune-telling largely derives from the Gypsy influence in the Brazilian lands.
spiritual gypsies
Just as the caboclos represent the original peoples, the old blacks represent the African ancestors, the work of the gypsies represents our ancestral heritage that has traveled the world and arrived in Brazil with its legends and mysteries, colorful clothes, sympathies for prosperity, love, health and protection, joy and celebration. The gypsy people became one of the most romantic spiritual lineages, as all this enchantment fell into the popular imagination that they speak Spanish, dance at bonfires and wear scarves with gold coins.
Being a gypsy
It is important to remember this, outside of this religious ritual scenario. Being a gypsy is an ethnicity, so it is not possible to become a gypsy because you have some of their characteristics. There are numerous cultural differences and today many gypsies are no longer nomads, they do not read oracles, nor are they pagans (they are not baptized in church), they do not practice witchcraft or any rite and cult of nature. Many are Catholic, evangelical or even have no religion at all. There are also several Gypsy dialects, but Romani became known as a common language between the ethnicities.
Sympathies for Santa Sara and the spiritual gypsies
In times of distress or difficulty, you need to bring this energy of renewal and joy into your life. Simply light a white candle, which symbolizes light. Ask the spiritual gypsies to guide you, so that the light enters your life and clarifies your paths, your path, because they are children of the wind and know the roads well. You can place some colorful fruits and flowers, a chalice with water and some coins in a way that looks very beautiful on your altar. Ask for it together with the candle to attract prosperity into your life and home. Then discard the fruits and flowers and throw the water on the ground. When the candle goes out, use the coins later. This ritual is also used to ask for a new love or for one’s love and family to be cared for and protected from envy and bad thoughts and energies.
Follow the roads of the world
There is a gypsy saying that says “When something falls from the carriage, you don’t stop to pick it up, but continue on your way, because that thing is no longer part of the journey.” May the holy Sara Kali cover everyone with her blue cloak, bringing good health and preserving them from all evil. May the Gypsies of spirituality guide you along the paths of life, bringing you today and always much joy and prosperity
Say hello to Saint Sara Kali and save the gypsies!
