The cardiologist explains that measuring the organ’s own beats and keeping one’s cardiovascular health updated avoids running the risk of sudden death
Do you remember when you were a child and, in class, you did an exercise in which you felt your heart, touching your wrist, to calculate its beats? According to cardiologist Dr. Alessandro Fagundes, this self-examination is a precious tool for understanding the health status of your organ and checking if you suffer from cardiac arrhythmia. Understand more:
Cardiac arrhythmia
Cardiac arrhythmia is a condition that affects more than 20 million Brazilians, causing 320,000 sudden deaths every year. Problems can start in the simplest ways and evolve over time. “The frequency of the beats can vary up or down, as in ventricular infarction or sinus tachycardia. The latter happens when we are afraid, we are under stress or we make physical effort”explains.
Additionally, some arrhythmias can also be caused by external factors, such as medications, side effects of illicit substances, non-recreational medications, or medications to treat certain diseases, as is the case with some arrhythmias. This group also includes diseases that affect the heart, such as hypertension, acute myocardial infarction, Chagas disease and myocarditis. “These situations can compromise the normal heart rhythm, accelerating it, generating tachycardia or slowing it down”details.
Are pre-workouts dangerous?
First, consult a doctor before deciding to use any stimulant, also known as a pre-workout. “Carrying out a cardiovascular risk assessment, identifying diseases that possibly put a person at risk, is extremely important. Therefore, adding these types of substances will not put the person at risk”alert.
Prevention
According to Fagundes, the best way to prevent these situations is to maintain cardiovascular health by controlling risk factors. “Avoid dangerous habits, such as smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, drug use, caffeine-based pre-workouts without consulting a specialist and energy drinks, especially if mixed with alcoholic beverages”, points out. Controlling blood pressure and blood sugar is also extremely important, so that the heart does not go out of order, increasing the risk of cardiac arrest.
