This drink became famous due to its carbohydrate content.
It doesn’t matter if you know it as sugarcane juice or garapa, at the street market or for those who like to maintain an active physical life. Among its many benefits, there are those who still question its usefulness, for example: is sugar cane juice consumed before or after training?
Sugarcane juice can perform both functions
“Suge sugarcane juice is a source of simple carbohydrates, such as glucose and fructose, which are quickly absorbed by the body and provide immediate energy for training. Additionally, consuming sugarcane juice before training can help to avoid hypoglycemia, a low blood sugar level, especially if the training is intense or long-lasting”, replied the the nutritionist Adriana Stavro in an exclusive interview with Sport Life.
The specialist explained that after training the body needs carbohydrates to replace the muscle glycogen consumed by exercise, in other words, sugarcane juice can help in this process. “It provides rapidly absorbed carbohydrates. Its high content of electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, also helps replenish fluids lost during physical activity,” he added.
As for the recommended amount before and after training, it may vary based on factors such as duration, intensity of exercise, nutritional needs and personal preferences. However, there are general guidelines.
General guidelines for sugarcane consumption
Before training
“Take 200 to 300 ml of sugarcane juice for 30 minutes to an hour before exercise,” he suggested.
During training
“100 ml intermittently during intense exercise can help prevent dehydration and replenish glycogen stores,” he explained.
After training
“300 to 500 ml can help replenish glycogen stores, hydrate and provide nutrients needed for muscle recovery,” he pointed out.
Is it better to drink pure sugarcane juice?
“By adding fruit such as lemon, orange or pineapple, you increase your intake of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, such as vitamin C, which is important for the immune system. Some fruits, such as pineapple or strawberries, contain fiber which aids digestion and promotes the feeling of satiety, useful for keeping energy levels stable and prolonging the feeling of satiety”, he explained.
Is it true that sugar cane juice makes you sleepy?
“There is no specific scientific evidence to suggest that sugarcane juice causes drowsiness. However, sugarcane juice is rich in carbohydrates, mainly in the form of simple sugars such as glucose and fructose. Consuming large quantities of foods or sugary drinks can cause insulin spikes, followed by a rapid drop in blood sugar levels, known as reactive hypoglycemia, which can lead to symptoms of drowsiness, tiredness and irritability”, concluded Adriana Stavro.
