Ministry of Health expands age range for dengue vaccine in doses close to expiring; see rules

The ministry underlines that this measure is “temporary and exceptional”; Brazil has already surpassed 6 million probable dengue cases this year

OR Ministry of Health published a technical note on the night of Friday 21st, in which expands the age range eligible to receive the dengue vaccine distributed by the Unified Health System (SUS). Expansion can be done gradual wayusing immunizers with deadlines scheduled for June 30th and July 31st.

Currently, the dengue vaccine is available for children aged 10 to 14 years. In states that have municipalities that have not yet received vaccine doses, what will be done is a movement of the vaccine to these cities, maintaining the age range recommended by the Ministry of Health.

But in states where all municipalities were covered, the age range will be expanded as follows:

  • The doses can be applied to people aged 6 to 16 years, as recommended by the World Health Organization;
  • If necessary, if the previous two procedures prove insufficient, this strategy can be extended up to the age limit specified in the dengue vaccine leaflet, which ranges from 4 to 59 years 11 months and 29 days of age, depending on the availability of doses in the municipality expiring in June and July 2024.

In the technical note, the ministry underlines that this is a “temporary and exceptional” measure.

According to the latest bulletin released by the ministry, as of Friday afternoon Brazil had more than 6 million probable cases of dengue, 4,060 confirmed deaths due to the disease and another 2,787 under investigation.
