5 Signs of Gum Problems That Can’t Be Ignored

Recognizing the signs is the first step to keeping your mouth healthy and avoiding complications.

Gum disease affects people all over the world and can progress silently, often unnoticed, until it becomes serious. When proper preventative measures are not taken, gum problems can lead to serious complications, such as tooth loss and systemic infections.

A report published by World Health Organization (WHO)It is estimated that 45% of the world’s population suffers from some form of oral disease, which can range from tooth decay to mild gingivitis and severe periodontitis.

According to the dentist and member of the Brazilian Society of Aesthetic Dentistry, José Todescan Júnior, a specialist in dental prosthetics, pediatric dentistry and endodontics, it is essential to be aware of the first signs of gum problems.

“Healthy gums are firm, pink in color, and don’t bleed easily. Any change in this condition could be an indication that something is wrong,” she says.

The specialist says that among the most common gum diseases are gingivitis and periodontitis, both resulting from the accumulation of dental biofilm on the teeth. Gingivitis, the mildest and most reversible form of the disease, can, in some cases, progress to periodontitis if left untreated, weakening the tissues that support the teeth.

Although the buildup of biofilm, also known as bacterial plaque, is the main cause of gum problems, there are factors that can modify or worsen this condition, such as genetics and smoking.

“Recognizing the warning signs and understanding the importance of oral hygiene are key steps to maintaining healthy gums and avoiding complications,” she says.

The expert reveals the five classic signs of gum problems and how to prevent them effectively:

Inflamed gums: They may appear red, swollen, and be tender to the touch;

Bleeding when brushing or flossing: This bleeding occurs because the gums are irritated and inflamed due to the build-up of dental biofilm;

Gum recession: Gum recession can be a sign or a consequence of gum disease. This problem can lead to tooth sensitivity and increase the risk of cavities and other problems;

Persistent bad breath: Bacteria that accumulate in plaque produce substances that cause unpleasant and persistent odors;

Loose teeth: It could be a sign of advanced periodontitis, where the degeneration of the supporting tissues around the teeth causes mobility. Periodontitis is a condition that has no cure, but it can be controlled. In more severe cases, tooth removal may be necessary.

Prevention methods

Todescan says prevention is the key to maintaining healthy gums and avoiding serious complications. Practicing proper oral hygiene is essential.

“This includes brushing your teeth at least three times a day, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, as well as using dental floss, interdental brushes and other home hygiene methods to remove plaque that builds up between your teeth,” she says.

Regular visits to the dentist are also essential to detect gum problems early and perform professional cleanings, which remove tartar and plaque.
