In Brazil, there are 43,700 people waiting for a transplant that could save their lives. The country is a point of reference in the field of organ transplants, ranking fourth in the world in absolute terms.

The greatest demand is for kidney transplants: about 40 thousand people. The doctor Gustavo Fernandesdirector of the transplant program at Santa Casa de Juiz de Fora, explains that the kidney is the organ most affected by the most widespread diseases in Brazil, such as diabetes and hypertension.

“We have a huge demand for kidney transplants because it is the organ affected by the most common diseases in the country. It is a challenge to meet the demand because the queue continues to grow”he said in an interview with the g1 portal

The average waiting time is 18 months. This time, however, can vary depending on the type of transplant, the patient’s health status and the volume of donors. The patient Louis Perillo A multivisceral transplant is required: there are five organs – kidney, liver, pancreas, intestine and stomach – that must be donated by the same person, which makes the process more complex and time-consuming. It’s been three years of waiting.
