While Gen Z advocates for covered shins, Millennials prefer short ones; understand
Social media is full of discussions about which style of socks is better: high socks or socks that go below the ankle. And the debate has become generational. While members of Generation Z defend socks that generally cover up to half of the shin, millennials, the previous generation, criticize short socks that go below the ankle.
In October, podcaster Phoebe Parsons said in a TikTok video that low socks were a sign of age. “I’m a millennial,” she says, showing off her foot in a low sock. Yes, taste is not up for debate. But socks represent the differences between generations. And as adults, centennials are putting their foot down.

Detachment from the previous generation
Image consultant Maysa Faggion explains that every twenty years, some trends tend to return. And this happens because no generation wants to maintain the standards of the previous one.
“If you look at fashion between the ’60s and the ’80s, when there was still a sporty style and visible socks, millennials born in the ’90s ended up wearing ankle socks when they grew up. They’re hidden in the shoe, because we end up rejecting the fashions of a generation before us,” he says.
Athleisure
But beyond the generation gap, centennial style is also linked to the so-called “athleisure,” which mixes sportswear with casual and classic clothing. One of the most common examples of this style is the blazer with sneakers. The idea is to “take some trend that is in fashion and mix it with sportswear,” says Faggion.
The movement, which prioritizes comfort, has been influenced by the period of the Covid-19 pandemic. “The question of wearing sneakers now, not only in sports environments, but in everyday life, came long after the pandemic, where the comfortable aspect gained a large proportion. People realized that it is possible to go out well dressed in comfortable clothes,” he explains.
