Ballerina Discovers Ovarian Cancer After Doctor Says She Was ‘Afraid of Gaining Weight’


Ana Lúcia Almeida Ribeiro noticed a swelling in her abdomen and went to a gynecologist




A dancer from São José do Rio Preto (SP) discovered ovarian cancer after a gynecologist told her she was “afraid of gaining weight”. The imaging test that detected the liquid was performed on July 19, 2018, exactly six years ago. The story was reported by TV TEM, an affiliate of Rede Globo.

Ana Lúcia Almeida Ribeiro, now 59 years old, they sought medical help when they noticed something different in their bodyin April 2018. The gynecologist, however, he suggested that it had an image distortion and advised him to consult a psychiatrist, even with the history of two family members who had died from the disease.

The changes in her body continued and the dancer said she had gotten to the point where she looked like a pregnant woman. Three months later she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

“I was very careful about my weight because I was a dancer. At 50, I lost seven kilos and I was in the best phase of my life. I weighed myself every week to regain control of my body. But within a week, I gained two kilos. It was the first sign, but the doctor said I was afraid of gaining weight,” Ribeiro told TV TEM.

“In April 2018, in one week, I gained two kilos in my abdomen. The doctor, unfortunately, looked at me and said that I was afraid of gaining weight, that I should go to a psychiatrist,” she recalled.

In February 2019, the woman underwent emergency surgery and began chemotherapy. After the procedure, He spent three days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

However, Ana Lúcia had two relapses, in 2020 and 2021. She now hopes to end her chemotherapy treatment once and for all in October this year. To cope with difficult times in life, the dancer turns to ballet.

“Ballet, without a doubt, helped me. When I went to the surgery center, I didn’t know if I would come back from the surgery. But, on the stretcher, I heard my children calling me. That was what gave me strength because I knew I had to go back to them,” he said.
