Can rosemary help hair growth?

The herb can also protect hair from the sun, pollution and other environmental elements.

If you want to grow your hair, you may have a solution in your kitchen cupboard, if TikTok and some dermatologists are right. Rosemary oil is great for hair growth in people with androgenetic alopecia, which is a common form of hair loss. According to an Insider article, the herb may also protect your hair from the sun, pollution, and other environmental elements.

A 2015 study published in the journal SkinMed found that rosemary oil was as effective as minoxidil, also known as Rogaine, on hair growth in men with androgenetic alopecia. Scalps were also less itchy after three to six months of use. The small study included only men.

However, dermatologist Shilpi Khetarpal told the Cleveland Clinic that it does seem to work. According to her, the study actually led people to seek out rosemary oil for hair growth. Subsequently, it became much more common in over-the-counter products, too.

It works against dandruff

The Cleveland Clinic even reports that rosemary oil can also help with dandruff and premature aging. The doctor suggests massaging rosemary oil into your scalp, letting it “soak” overnight, and then washing it out. Try doing this two to three times a week. Also note that only a few drops are needed, and that the focus should be on your scalp, not your hair, as the oil can make your strands greasy.

It could take six months for “significant improvements,” Shilpi said. In the meantime, TikTok users are loving to tout the oil’s hair-care qualities. Videos with the hashtag #rosemaryoil (rosemary oil) have been viewed more than two billion times on the social media platform.
