Study Reveals 4 New Symptoms of High Blood Sugar That May Indicate Diabetes

During the study, participants showed unusual signs of diabetes. The study reveals 4 new symptoms of high blood sugar that could indicate diabetes appears first in A Diabetic.

Recent research has discovered new hand symptoms that may indicate high blood sugar levels and the onset of diabetes.

THE A portal for diabetics found that the study group at University of Exeterin the UK, analysed data from 370,000 participants and identified signs that go beyond the typical manifestations of high glucose levels in the body.

The new symptoms related to high blood sugar are:

  • Frozen shoulder: Also known as adhesive capsulitis, it is a condition that causes stiffness and pain in the shoulder. It feels as if the shoulder is “frozen”, limiting movement.
  • Trigger finger: is a condition that causes locking and difficulty in extending a finger of the hand. It is as if the finger is “locked” in a flexed position,
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome: It is a condition that causes pain, tingling, and numbness in the hand and fingers, especially at night.
  • Dupuytren’s contracture: is a condition that causes the tissue in the palm of the hand to shorten and thicken, forming nodules and cords. Over time, these cords can pull on the fingers, curling them into the palm, making it difficult to open them fully.

These conditions, related to the upper extremities, include everything from stiff joints to numbness and tingling in the wrists, as well as thickening and tightening of the connective tissue in the hands.

The study also found that the buildup of a substance called advanced glycation end products (AGEs), resulting from high blood sugar levels over time, can be responsible for damage to tendons, joints, and connective tissue. This explains the correlation between high blood sugar and upper limb muscle and bone problems identified in the study.

This new development reinforces the importance of preventive screening and medical monitoring to prevent complications from diabetes, both type 1 and type 2.

Understanding the most common symptoms of diabetes:

  • Symptoms of type 1 diabetes: Frequent hunger; constant thirst; urge to urinate several times a day; weight loss; weakness; fatigue; mood swings; nausea and vomiting.
  • Symptoms of type 2 diabetes: Frequent hunger; constant thirst; tingling in the feet and hands; urge to urinate multiple times; frequent bladder, kidney, skin and wound infections; wounds that take time to heal; blurred vision.

If you suspect you have diabetes, it is important to see a doctor and perform laboratory tests, such as a fasting blood glucose test or a glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) test, to confirm the diagnosis of diabetes.

Early diagnosis and regular medical monitoring are essential to control diabetes and prevent long-term complications.
