Does Chewing Gum For Hours Define Your Jawline? Dentist Issues Warning

The technique has gone viral on social media with the promise of “natural facial harmonization”

The search for a more defined facial contour has led many people to perform the famous facial harmonization and also to try alternative methods. But one of them has gained space in recent weeks on social media thanks to an unusual technique: the use of chewing gum, the popular gum, to define the jawline.

The technique, known as “natural facial harmonization,” involves constantly chewing gum to tone the jaw muscles. But does it really work?

In an interview with Earth you, the dentist Larissa Valadares states that there is no evidence to prove that constant chewing gum can tone the jaw.

According to the expert, when we chew we activate several facial muscles, including the masseter muscle. This muscle, when hypertrophic, promotes a more pronounced facial contour, which often resembles the effect obtained with facial harmonization.

However, for this to happen, this muscle must be activated for several hours a day, which causes fatigue not only in the muscle but also in other muscles involved in the chewing process.

“It is difficult for a person to be able to make the same number of chewing movements on the right side and the left side – we generally chew on more than one side – which can cause facial asymmetry and one side becoming larger than the other,” says the dentist.

In addition to not being the best or safest way to achieve aesthetic benefits on your face, excessive gum chewing can cause facial pain, headaches, long-term tooth wear, and temporomandibular joint problems.

For those who ignore the aesthetic research but do not give up chewing gum, the expert emphasizes that the type least harmful to oral health is the sugar-free one.

“Preferably sweetened with xylitol because it is not fermented by oral flora bacteria, so it is less likely to develop cavity lesions,” he concludes.
