Renata Sayuri shared her experience of psychiatric treatment and gave advice to those suffering from mental illnesses
Renata Sayuri, 43, known as the presenter of Band Kids and other television projects, has spoken publicly about her recent hospitalization in a psychiatric clinic in São Sebastião do Paraíso (MG), where she was treated for her bipolar disorder. The artist, who has been living with the disease for 20 years, decided to speak openly about the issue after the news of her hospitalization had repercussions in the media.
“I have been in treatment for 20 years. The last hospitalization, by chance, was in the press. I am not fighting an illness or an addiction. I have been living with a psychiatric illness for 20 years,” Sayuri said on her social media. She emphasized that it is possible to live with psychiatric illnesses, thanks to advances in treatment, and stressed the importance of demystifying the environment of psychiatric clinics, referring to the dark history of institutions such as the Hospital Colônia de Barbacena.
Internment and prejudice
The actress advised those suffering from mental illness or addiction to seek help without shame. “20 years ago, when I was diagnosed, I sought out a psychoanalyst therapist and asked her how I should behave in society, if I could talk to people and tell them about my diagnosis. With her experience, she thought it was better not to. Not that I hide it, but she didn’t advise me to bring it out in the open,” she said.
Today Sayuri says she has overcome her fear of prejudice: “When I talk about it, I no longer have the terror or the terrible fear of segregation, of prejudice, of being left without a job, without friends, of being ostracized by society.” .”
Support and humanization
Renata stressed the importance of seeking humanized care in cases where hospitalization is necessary. “There are hospitals prepared for humanized reception. You will find professionals prepared to welcome drug addicts, as well as those with psychiatric problems, like me,” she said.
With a career marked by stints in productions such as “Malhação”, “Sítio do Pica-pau Amarelo” and “Pequena Travessa”, as well as having acted as a presenter in “Band Kids” [com o nome Kira]Sayuri is currently away from the spotlight and lives in the interior of Minas Gerais. Her last work as an actress was in the film “Let Me Live” (2016) and the series “A Vida Secreta dos Casais” (2017).
