Trials have shown that existing vaccines are more effective and the agency has decided to “focus on more promising avenues”
THE Butantan Institute has decided to discontinue production of ButanVac, a candidate for Vaccine against the COVID-19. According to the organization, the result “did not meet the established prerequisites for success.”
Tests with the product were already in phase 2, when 200 volunteers received ButanVac and another 200 were immunized. vaccines already available in the Unified Health System (SUS). According to the note released by Butantan, after 28 days, the amount of antibodies in the blood of those who had received ButanVac was not comparable to that observed in those who had received another vaccine.
The body said it had discussed and agreed with the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) that ButanVac’s performance should not be inferior to that of existing immunisers and, therefore, the research was stopped.
“In this case, the results did not demonstrate the expected immunogenicity. Therefore, we stopped its development and continued to develop more promising routes. Our commitment is to science and the health of the population,” said Esper Kallás, director of the Butantan Institute, in a statement.
Butantan provides eight types of vaccines to the Ministry of Health: the trivalent seasonal influenza, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, HPV, rabies, the triple bacterial vaccine (DTP, which protects against whooping cough, tetanus and diphtheria) and the double vaccine for adults (DTPA, against diphtheria and tetanus).
“The clinical trial has played its role. At Butantan we have absolute respect for the scientific process and the results. Therefore, the population can believe in us. When we say that a vaccine is good, it is because the studies have proven it,” Kallas added.
