The research conducted at Stanford and Nanyang Universities followed 108 individuals for two years to study their molecular aging
Recently, a research published in the scientific journal Natural aging have revealed ages at which the aging process is more pronounced. The study, conducted by scientists from the universities of Stanfordus United StatesAND NanyangIn Singaporethey identified two significant accelerations in molecular aging: one at age 44 and another at age 60.
The research monitored 108 individuals for several years to assess changes in the body’s molecules, such as RNA and proteins. Contrary to the idea that we age gradually, the results showed that there are two peaks of acceleration in aging.
The teacher Xiao Tao Shenfrom the Nanyang Technological Universityhe highlighted that “We don’t age constantly”. There are important moments that affect our aging and overall health. At age 44, you may notice a reduction in your ability to metabolize substances such as caffeine and alcohol.
The peaks of aging
Michael Snyderhead of Stanford’s genetics department, noted that changes in the body are linked to two distinct waves of aging, which affect various bodily functions. People report a higher incidence of muscle breakdown and fat gain in their 40s, while muscle loss (sarcopenia) becomes more pronounced at age 60.
Researchers have found that accelerated aging affects the body’s tissues, especially the skin and muscles, as well as the cardiovascular system. After age 60, the risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and type 2 diabetes increases significantly.
These findings allow us to better understand the critical periods of human aging, facilitating more effective diagnosis and preventive measures. The team emphasized that this knowledge can help improve health management in aging populations.
The studies followed individuals between the ages of 25 and 75 for about two years. Samples were collected regularly to analyze molecular changes. It was observed that both men and women showed similar aging patterns, suggesting a common process in both sexes.
Furthermore, a previous study conducted by researchers from Germany and the United States, indicated a third stage of accelerated aging at age 75. However, current research has not been able to confirm this due to the age range of the participants.
Scientists recommend lifestyle changes as you approach your 40s and 60s to mitigate the effects of accelerated aging. Recommendations include reducing alcohol consumption, getting regular exercise, and eating a balanced diet.
