Asics and Brazilian brand P. Andrade create sneakers inspired by a beetle

The Asics x P. Andrade Gel-Kayano 14, retailing for R$1,199.99, features the colors of the Lamprocyphus Augustus beetle, native to the Amazon.

Asics joins forces with P. Andrade, a renowned Brazilian fashion brand, to launch a special edition of the Gel-Kayano 14. Inspired by the exotic beauty of the Lamprocyphus Augustus beetle, native to the Amazon, this collaboration was creatively directed by designers Pedro Andrade and Paula Kim, and brings a fresh perspective to tennis, enriching it with an aesthetic that reflects contemporary luxury and innovation.

The choice of the beetle as the pillar of the collection was not accidental. It was carried out after an in-depth research on the Brazilian fauna, which revealed not only the beauty, but also the scientific potential of the Lamprocyphus Augustus, whose photonic carapace could inspire technological advances in optical computing. The result of this inspiration is a sneaker that captures the metallic essence of the beetle, with subtle shades and tones that vary between purple and green, creating an iridescent effect that promises not to go unnoticed. The development lasted about a year and a half, making several versions until arriving at the final project.

More than just a visual connection, the beetle also ties this project to the history of the sneaker that served as its basis. The Gel-Kayano, created in 1993 by visionary designer Toshikazu Kayano, pays homage to its creator not only in its name, but in its inspiration from beetle shells, with an exoskeletal structure that brings durability and support to the sneaker. In other words, Kayano and Andrade drank the same “beetle juice.”

Collab also offers clothing

In addition to the sneakers, the collaboration extends to a clothing line that includes t-shirts, pants and a jacket, all inspired by the anatomy of the beetle and made with fabrics imported from Japan. This collection not only complements the sneakers, but also establishes a dialogue between sport and casual, enriched by details and stories that refer to the central theme.

Constanza Novillo, Marketing Director of Asics, highlights the importance of collaborations for the brand, noting that they allow us to explore new visions. “Collaborations are fundamental for Asics, as they allow us to explore new perspectives and incorporate innovative elements into our products. The partnership with P. Andrade reflects our constant commitment to staying connected to our audience, offering relevant and unique stories and products that are even more innovative.”

Pedro Andrade, in turn, sees the collection as an opportunity to provoke new sensations. “We want to show beauty through strangeness, especially in small creatures, but fundamental to the regeneration of our planet. The collection is an invitation to a more attentive and loving look at the small things in nature.”

Available from August 30th on the brands website and at major global retailers, and from August 31st at Asics Oscar Freire, PIET, Your ID and Guadalupe, the new Gel-Kayano 14 is priced at R$ 1,199.99, while apparel starts at R$ 399.99. .
