The expert talks about this problem that affects a large part of the population and gives advice to avoid it

You may have already seen someone with varicose veins on their legs or even be the person who has this characteristic. They arise, according to the Ministry of Health, due to the dilation of some veins and blood vessels that should send blood back to the heart, but which, because they are dilated, end up failing to perform this function, accumulating fluid inside them. It is precisely this accumulated blood that gives the greenish and purple appearance of varicose veins, very common in the legs, thighs and feet.

What are the causes?

According to Leonardo Stambowsky, full member of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SBACV) and the American Society of Vascular Surgery, although genetic inheritance is the main cause of the appearance of varicose veins, external factors such as lack of physical activity also contribute to their emergence. “Genetics is always the main factor, but their appearance can be influenced by a sedentary lifestyle, being overweight, hormone use, pregnancy, smoking and age,” he explains. Malu.

Varicose Veins Types and Risks

The professional also states that there are basically three types of varicose veins in our body. “In general, there are microvaricose veins (small veins), nutrient reticular veins, which feed the varicose veins, and the varicose veins themselves, those that ‘swell’ the skin,” explains the vascular surgeon.

In addition to the negative aesthetic effect, there are other health effects that varicose veins can have, says Stambowsky. “Varicose veins can cause blood clots, bleeding, ulcers, and symptoms such as heaviness, swelling, cramps, among others.”

Laser treatment avoids cuts and surgery

Although surgery to treat varicose veins is relatively simple, safe and quick to heal, Leonardo says that, currently, one hundred percent of cases can be treated with laser technology, which avoids cuts and bleeding.

“A thorough evaluation by a specialist is essential, who, based on the results, will propose an individualized plan for that patient. Today, it is possible to treat all cases with laser, thus avoiding surgery,” he says.

Prevention!

The doctor also has bad news for the lazy ones on duty: physical activity helps prevent the appearance of these dilated veins. “For prevention, physical activity, avoiding long periods of standing and sitting, avoiding the use of hormones, cigarettes and in some cases the use of elastic stockings”.

Myths about varicose veins

The doctor explains the main myths related to this health problem. “Contrary to popular belief, weight training or climbing stairs does not lead to varicose veins. Even the sun does not cause or worsen the condition, it should simply be avoided during treatment. Standing or sitting for a long time can, in fact, contribute to the worsening or appearance of varicose veins in those who are already predisposed to them,” says Stambowsky.

Important tip: Autumn and winter are the best times to treat varicose veins!

In this case, the specialist explains that these stations contain less sunlight, which can help with recovery from the procedures. “It is important to avoid sun exposure during treatment, and some treatments require the use of elastic stockings after the procedure! This becomes much easier in the colder months,” he adds.

According to the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, autumn is a great season to perform dermatological and aesthetic procedures. At this time of year, the incidence of UV rays is lower, which helps recovery from treatments. Another positive factor is the milder climate, which can avoid side effects and even secondary pigmentation on the skin.
