Bacon Day: 10 Practical Recipes to Make the Most of the Ingredient

The classic smoking of hamburgers is presented in ten easy and different preparations to make at home

Bacon Day is celebrated on August 31st, and to celebrate the date, we’ve put together the following collection of 10 recipes that showcase its full potential, adding its smoky flavor and aroma and different textures to preparations involving pasta, broths and meats, as well as some ways to make great burgers that go beyond the classic X-bacon, plus a handy homemade trick to learn how to make the product at home.

How to make bacon at home

Let’s start from the beginning, preparing the ingredient at home, as is customary here at Paladar. And yes, you can make bacon in the kitchen using pork belly. Just mix seasonings such as black pepper, rosemary and sweet paprika with table salt, rub the mixture on the meat and let it cure in the refrigerator. Smoking is not allowed in the homemade version. The process is simple, it just requires attention to the processes. Find out how to do it here.

1. Lentils with bacon

Well, no one needs to make bacon at home to enjoy its many possibilities. At the market you can buy it in pieces, strips or cubes: that’s how this recipe was born, inspired by a creation by chef Erick Jacquin. This dish will remind you of lentils all year round, not just on New Year’s Eve. Find out how to do it here.

2. Rigatoni with mushrooms, bacon and cherry tomatoes

A flavorful sauce that is easy to make and error-free. This recipe is inspired by boscaiola, an Italian classic that uses fresh and dried mushrooms, garlic, and tomatoes. In this version, the fat and flavor of the bacon complete the mix. It is best served with tube-shaped pasta, such as penne or rigatoni. Discover the recipe here.

3. Sweet Potatoes Gratin with Bacon

Think of a recipe that is perfect for colder days. It is an adaptation of the potato gratin à la dauphinoise with ham and bacon, made with sweet potatoes, diced bacon and parmesan. See the recipe here.

4. Sirloin with bacon

In this recipe, perfect for the end-of-year tables, the pork loin is wrapped in slices of bacon before going into the oven. The preparation is simple, but the meat takes about 90 minutes to roast. Find out how to do it here.

5. Baked vegetables

This recipe works as a side dish or appetizer. The vegetables can vary according to the choice of the person preparing it, but the fundamental thing is the bacon. Discover the recipe here.

6. Club sandwich

Created in the United States in 1894, this sandwich is a classic replicated around the world. Here the bacon is accompanied by shredded chicken, tomato and lettuce. Find out how to do it here.

7. Lyonnaise salad, with bacon and poached egg

In Chef Mark Bittman’s recipe, bacon and a poached egg add crunch and balance to a light, simple salad. If necessary, you can warm the vinaigrette and pour it over the leaves so they wilt a bit. Discover the recipe here.

8. Eggs Benedict with bacon

Eating eggs and bacon for breakfast is a classic (and almost a cliché) of American culture and cinema. The recipe of Frutaria Pitaya presents a slightly different version of the preparation from the most known one, replacing the scrambled eggs with Benedictine eggs, with hollandaise sauce and crispy bacon slices served on a slice of soft brioche bread.

It’s no wonder the combination of eggs and bacon is so popular: the flavors and textures go together, and both ingredients are generally easy to prepare. To learn this simple recipe step by step, click here on this link.

9. Carbonara burger

Savory cake or bread: call it what you want, but the recipe by chef Helô Bacellar, of Na Cozinha da Helô, is very easy to prepare and is soft and moist, perfect to eat with a green salad or to serve as an afternoon snack.

The dough is similar to that of a blended cake, and you can include and/or replace the suggested fillings with other ingredients, but Helô guarantees that the combination of spinach, mushrooms and bacon is unmissable.

10. Bay of Two

One of the classics of Brazilian cuisine made according to the easy recipe of chef Helô Bacellar could be a good idea for a complete and delicious lunch during the week. Rice, beans, dried meat, bacon and ricotta are the basic ingredients of this dish, and the idea is to make a real “mixture”.

One of the chef’s suggestions to vary the recipe a bit is to use different types of beans in addition to the carioca. The suggestions were fradinho and rosinha, it is worth trying depending on your taste or what you have at home.
