Learn how to solve 3 types of airline problems

Understand what to do if you have problems with your airline, such as lost luggage or flight cancellation

Traveling is always wonderful, but sometimes the journey begins with moments of stress when there is a problem with the flight to reach the destination. Whether it is a delay, a cancellation of the flight or a lost luggage, there are several problems that may occur with the airlineand it is important to know in advance how resolve them if they occur.

Robert Beserra, an aviation law specialist, explains that, in any problem, one of the main measures is to keep all flight documentation in order. “Keep documents related to your flight, such as tickets, proof of payment and communications with the airline. They are essential to formalize a complaint,” he explains.

Additionally, once you have filed a complaint, it is always important to follow up on it. “If you do not receive a response within the timeframe, contact us again to request a position. In some cases, you may need to escalate the complaint to regulatory bodies or seek legal assistance,” Beserra warns.

It is also important to remember that laws can vary depending on the country and the type of flight. But in addition to these more general tips, the specialist also has some recommendations for specific cases of problems with the airline that are quite common.

View and know your rights in each case:

Flight delay

The first step is to be well informed about your rights in the event of a flight delay. Depending on the length of the delay and the circumstances, you may be entitled to assistance, reimbursement or financial compensation.

“Passengers on domestic and international flights need to know the laws that protect their rights. In many cases, such as under European Union Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004, airlines are obliged to provide support and compensation,” Beserra explains.

Flight cancellation

In the event of a cancellation, there are also specific procedures in place to ensure that you do not lose out. “If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a refund or re-routing to another flight. The airline must also provide assistance, such as food and accommodation, depending on the waiting time,” advises Beserra.

To better understand your options in this regard, it is important to contact the airline.

Lost luggage

Nothing ruins a trip more than arriving at your destination and finding that your bags are gone. In these cases, acting quickly is essential.

“As soon as you realize your bag hasn’t arrived, go to the airline’s complaints desk to fill out a Baggage Irregularity Report (RIB). From there, you’ll need to go through the baggage tracking process,” Beserra advises.

It also emphasizes that if the baggage does not show up, the passenger is entitled to financial compensation.
