Some daily habits that seem harmless trigger anxiety and to reduce the problem it is necessary to avoid them.
We are still inside Yellow Septemberand there is nothing better than this month to discuss and raise awareness on issues related to mental health. Even more anxietya problem that affects 9.3% of the Brazilian population, according to a survey by the World Health Organization (WHO). And the number could be much higher, because many people do not realize the seriousness of the problem.
The most obvious symptoms of anxiety are restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, a feeling of “emptiness” in the mind, irritability, muscle tension, sleep disturbances, excessive fear and worry, and an unregulated appetite. However, it manifests itself differently for each person.
“Other signs that may go unnoticed are shortness of breath, chest pain, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, sweating, tremors, and dry mouth,” warns Camila Araújo, a psychology professional at AmorSaúde, a network of clinics partnered with Cartão di TUTTI.
For the specialist, it is very important to seek psychotherapeutic help if you feel these things. “With guidance and psychological help, it is possible to manage anxiety attacks, as well as identify where this dysfunctional pattern has settled to think about improvements, creating new habits so that the individual can reduce suffering,” he says.
However, in addition to seeking help, there are other measures you can take to try to reduce anxiety, especially by avoiding some harmful habits.
Habits That Can Trigger Anxiety
Some of the daily habits that may seem harmless, but you should avoid if you want to reduce anxiety, are:
- Don’t have a routine
- If you compare
- Suffer in advance
- Do not practice any physical activity
- Not getting quality sleep
- Not having a healthy diet
- Excessive use of screens
- Don’t express your feelings
Specifically, regarding the excessive use of screens, Araújo explains that this has an impact on mental health because it activates the reward system, the structure of the brain that receives all the pleasant activities. And the constant stimulation of this activity generates addiction, increasing stress, comparison, racing thoughts and anxiety.
Lack of quality sleep causes difficulty paying attention and memorizing, as well as mood and anxiety disorders. And not eating well can cause vitamin deficiencies, causing fatigue, discouragement, mood swings, among others.
“Even too much caffeine and alcohol can cause a lot of damage, causing symptoms such as nervousness, agitation, insomnia and increased heart rate,” the professional emphasizes.
Araújo also warns that not having a routine can cause excessive worry, mood swings, stress, procrastination, and anxiety. “When we have defined schedules and tasks, there is less room for unexpected events and unpleasant surprises, which helps reduce the anxiety associated with uncertainty about what the future holds,” she says.
