It is 60 kilometers from Recife, the capital of Pernambuco. […]

Just mention the name of this destination, south of the capital Pernambuco, and colorful rafts that follow one another through calm waters to natural pools come to mind.

But Porto de Galinhas is much more than this.

This hamlet of the municipality of Ipojuca is located about 50 kilometers from Recife and is known for the beach of the same name, which took its name during the prohibition of the slave trade at the end of the 19th century, where slaves were hidden under guinea fowl crates.

“There are new chickens in the harbor” was the watchword to alert locals to the arrival of a new human cargo.

Currently the destination is one of the most sought after tourist addresses by Brazilians.

Tours include 40 to 50 minutes of sailing until the Maracaípe River meets the sea, stopping inside the mangrove. On the way back, be sure to visit Vila de Todos os Santos, a sort of miniature version of Quadrado de Trancoso, in Bahia.

In 2019 the district won the Porto de Galinha Lighthouses, a 14-meter high tower with panoramic views of the region.

Six kilometers from the center of the district is Praia do Cupe, the last strip of sand on the north coast of Porto de Galinhas, ideal for surfing or simply contemplating, due to the strong waves. On the other side is Pontal do Cupe, with calmer waters and popular with families.
