During surgery to treat endometriosis, a 34-year-old woman underwent heart surgery without authorization by a gynecologist in São Paulo. After the operation, carried out without the presence of a specialist in the sector, she was diagnosed with pericarditis and now has to monitor herself so as not to exceed one hundred heartbeats per minute with the risk of getting sick and even dying. The case, reconstructed by Folha de S. Paulo with the testimonies of his family, he secretly escapes from the courts.

She and her husband reportedly decided to get pregnant in 2022 and discovered the presence of endometriosis, which caused the woman’s infertility. Therefore, they scheduled surgery to remove the pockets of endometriosis so they could continue with their plan to get pregnant naturally. The surgery was scheduled for October 2023.
What was expected was that the target of the procedure would be the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and colon. But, according to the complaint, the gynecologist also expanded the operation to treat the endometriosis that affected the diaphragm and the perikaryon, the membrane that surrounds the heart. The operation took more than double the expected time and was carried out without the presence of a surgeon specializing in cardiology, the family claims.
Civil police opened an investigation to investigate the case in April. According to the document, also obtained by the newspaper, the patient has developed an “incurable disease”, which makes her dependent on the continuous use of drugs. Because of the situation, she can’t even exercise or get pregnant, among other restrictions.
In addition to the Civil Police, the Ethics Committee of the Israelite Albert Einstein Hospital and the Regional Medical Council of the State of São Paulo (Cremesp) are also investigating the case. In the vehicle, the hospital says it “continues to be in contact with the patient and her family, offering all necessary support” and that the medical conduct is under investigation. Cremesp has opened an investigation to investigate the complaint.
The gynecologist reported is Ricardo Mendes Alves Pereira. Because the case is being kept secret from the courts, his defense has not commented. The woman did not want to speak publicly about the complaint.
