Regular exercise is widely recommended to keep the body fit and prevent chronic diseases. However, its benefits go far beyond physical health. Several studies have shown that physical activity also plays an essential role in mental health, helping to reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress.

To find out how exercise affects your brain and emotions, Earth you spoke with psychiatrist Cíntia Braga about the mechanisms underlying these effects.

The expert states that physical exercise triggers a series of biological responses, such as the release of endorphins, bdnf (brain-derived neurotrophic factor – important for nauroplasticity) and the stimulation of the endocannabinoid system.

Furthermore, the practice reduces levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, and increases synaptic plasticity, promoting communication between neurons.

Regular exercise reduces symptoms of anxiety

The professional states that regular exercise still plays a role in regulating metabolic processes, which in turn modulates the stress response system, making the individual less reactive to stressful stimuli.

“Physical activity increases the release of endorphins and helps balance the production of serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters linked to pleasure and well-being. Dopamine is associated with motivation and rewards. This chemical balance helps control depressive and anxious symptoms,” says the doctor.

Intensity and duration are the keys

According to the psychiatrist, moderate to high intensity exercises, lasting 30 to 60 minutes, performed 3 to 5 times a week, have shown the greatest benefits for mental health.

More intense activities release greater quantities of neurotransmitters linked to well-being, however, even light and regular exercise promotes positive effects, especially in reducing anxiety.

The doctor says that in addition to the chemical effects, exercise promotes a sense of accomplishment and improves self-esteem.

“Socially it can increase integration and support, especially in group activities, creating a sense of belonging and reducing social isolation, an important factor in the worsening of disorders such as depression and anxiety,” he concludes.
