A new handbag, a box of sneakers, a jar of vitamins – wherever they go! You’ve probably thrown away dozens, if not hundreds, of silica gel packets, but today the rules of the game will change: we’ll tell you how to use them.
Let’s start with the hardware.
What is silica gel?
Silica gel is a dried gel made from silicic acids, the main superpower of which is the ability to actively absorb moisture. In industry, it is used for various purposes – from drying various gases to protecting equipment from corrosion during storage.
The secret to silica gel is that the pearl isn’t actually a pearl. If you look at it under a microscope, you can see that it consists of many fibers intertwined with each other – they absorb water. The gel is capable of absorbing 40% of moisture from its own volume.
Silica gel lasts between one and three years, but there is a simple trick that can extend it for eternity. Dry the bags by leaving them in the sun or placing them in the oven at 80°C for 15 minutes and they are ready to be used again.

Silica gel itself is harmless: you will not be poisoned if you eat it. However, this should not be done: on the one hand, this can lead to intestinal dehydration, and on the other hand, manufacturers often use additives – for example, intended to repel rodents or colored humidity indicators.
If you know the properties of silica gel, you can easily reuse it. For example, here is what you can do.
