Despite progress made in countries with growing economies, hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition are increasing in several regions of the world. Malnutrition affects approximately 733 million people, especially in rural areas, where extreme poverty and food insecurity are most evident.

According to data obtained from the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger, more than 2.8 billion people do not have access to healthy food. This means that nearly 1/3 of the global population is not getting the nutrients and micronutrients needed to thrive and, in some cases, survive.

The event highlights the importance for everyone of eating well, in a balanced and healthy way. This is why it is important to have a colorful meal, with greens, greens and proteins.

What does World Food Day mean?

The date is an annual collective action that takes place in 150 countries and makes World Food Day one of the most celebrated in the United Nations (UN) calendar. Every year, FAO chooses a different theme for the day’s celebration and they all aim to raise awareness of the importance of humans around the world having access to sufficient, safe, diverse and nutritious food.

The theme chosen in 2024 is “A commitment to the right to food and food security”.

Data shows that millions of people around the world do not have access to adequate, healthy food. This puts them at high risk of food insecurity.

Despite the different themes, each year the date celebration focuses on four themes: better nutrition, better production, better environment and better quality of life.

Why was World Food Day created?
