Flowers on your table: how to decorate a fall dinner with floral arrangements

Flowers on your table: how to decorate a fall dinner with floral arrangements

With the onset of cold weather, we try to insulate the interior: we buy aromatic candles, we take cozy blankets out of the cupboards and we pay special attention to thematic table settings. Marina Spiridonova, head of the design department of the chain of flower studios FMART by flowwow, explains how to choose the style for an autumn dinner, serving dishes and why dried flowers alone in the decor will not be enough.

The autumn scenography is dominated by a pastoral atmosphere. The advantage is that it can be conveyed in various styles: Wild West, Provence, Japanese minimalism. The main thing is not to get carried away with stereotypical decoration, but to look for more laconic and stylish ideas. For example, in the style of the Wild West, abandon hats and figurines of bulls. Instead, add leather and checkered patterns to your decor and choose vanilla and tobacco scents for your diffuser. Add cereal ears, grain panicles, sunflowers, orange and red statice and oats to the bouquet. Channeling the aesthetic of Japanese minimalism, highlight the beauty of each element. Place several small vases with twigs. Abandon pomp and riot of colors – add metallic shades.

If, on the contrary, you want to add luxury to your fall decor, choose a baroque style in your scenography. Take a closer look at velvet fabrics and napkins, paint dried flowers with gold paint, place mirrors with baguette frames near the bouquet. In the flower arrangement combine rich and rich shades: burgundy, terracotta, purple and black. Make bouquets of ranunculus, single-headed chrysanthemums, dahlias and sunflowers.

It is very important to choose a style before starting work, so as not to add incompatible flowers and accessories to the same composition. It is also important to consider a few additional rules when designing fall decor.

Let’s leave the mono bouquets for summer.

Graphic compositions dominate fall floristry. In the center of the bouquet, several bright flowers usually remain – roses, hydrangeas or anthuriums in red, yellow and ocher tones. Lush panicles of millet, branches of dried papaver, setaria or lagurus are added along the perimeter of the composition.

Autumn bouquets are uneven and heterogeneous, they have a lot of colors and textures. There is no need to adjust the length of the rods to match the same size – this will deprive the composition of its dynamics. But don’t overdo it with the shades, use no more than 2-3.

We boldly combine dried flowers with fresh flowers.

Don’t be afraid to choose spiky, uneven dried flowers with complex shapes like leucandendron and combine them with round, succulent flowers like dahlias or chrysanthemums.

Unfortunately, dried flowers don’t last forever. After a few weeks, they start to fall off, so it’s important to rarely move them. On a small table, it is better to place the composition on the side, and on a long and spacious table – in the center.

We remove the packaging.

Use flower packaging only for transport. Paper and cellophane in the room distract attention from the bouquet, and because of them, mold often develops on the stems and water blooms. It is better to pay attention to the vase: ceramic and glass containers with a bionic shape are welcome in the autumn decor.

But you should not choose vases that are too extravagant. They should fit into the overall decor of the table and not draw attention to themselves.

Let’s not forget the details.

A single bouquet will not be enough to create the entire scenography. For a complete fall composition, you will need more details.

You can draw inspiration from classic associations with fall: harvest of vegetables, sheaves of hay, red maple leaves and bare trees. These stories can easily take root on your table. The compositions based on cabbage, zucchini and pumpkin are colorful. And pieces of raw wood covered with moss, decorated with berries and acorns, add forest calm and comfort to the scenography.

In the fall scenography, it is better not to use green tones, which are more appropriate in a spring or summer decor. The exception is saturated shades. You should also avoid artificial flowers, fruits and vegetables.

We borrow the decoration from autumn itself.

You can collect details for table decoration right on the street! Place fallen leaves under clear epoxy resin cup holders and use maple and rowan branches instead of a bouquet.

Another idea is to collect small acorns and pine cones and place them in a vase or empty wine bottle with a small battery-powered LED string light. An unusual solution is to wrap the dry twigs of your composition in a bright vase.

We think about the presentation of the dishes.

Choose beautiful plates and glasses. Also, they don’t all have to come from the same set. The main thing is to choose minimalist textures, without accent details.

Do not put all hot dishes on the table at once, but serve them in portions on a plate for each guest. You can leave snacks on the table, but it is also important to serve them in the same color scheme and on special dishes, for example, wooden ones. If you’re afraid of making a mistake, order ready-made buffet sets or get inspired by ideas from Pinterest.

We pay attention to lighting.

Candles will add autumnal comfort. Containers, filled in pretty molds, they are already a decorative element in themselves. Place them in the middle of the table or near each guest.

For classic shaped candles, you will need to find a matching candle holder. The easiest way is to install thin candles in the neck of the bottle. Thicker, larger candles can be arranged on a small tray.

Set aside aromatic candles for drinking tea at dinner, use spot lighting from tablet candles. On the Internet you can find many unusual candlesticks with bizarre shapes – from stone to wooden frame.

If you are afraid that the dog will pull on the tablecloth and drop the candle, use thin LED strips without bulky bulbs for lighting. They can be used to decorate flower arrangements or hide under a tablecloth. Try using battery-powered LED strips so you don’t overload your elegant table with wires.
