Chef Bruna Lopes gives advice on the best way to preserve vegetables, fruit and eggs
Do you know how to properly store food? In or out of the fridge? Chef Bruna Lopes has recorded a video with valuable advice for those who are unsure of the best place to store vegetables, fruit and eggs.
Potatoes and sweet potatoes should always be stored out of the refrigerator. “Starch loses its consistency in the refrigerator,” explains Bruna. Onions and garlic should also be kept out and separated.
The carrot should be stored inside the appliance: “In a pan of water it will last up to three weeks, crunchy”, he advises.
Eggs should be stored in the refrigerator and not in the door, so as not to suffer from temperature changes. Another tip from the pro is to leave the thinnest tip facing down so the eggs stay fresher.
Bananas will last longer if kept out of the refrigerator and separated from the bunch, just like apples. If you want to hang them, they will take even longer to ripen.
As for the tomato, if it is green it can be put out of the refrigerator and if you want to speed up the process you can add an apple, as the fruit releases ethylene which accelerates ripening. When tomatoes are ripe, they can be stored in the refrigerator with the stem facing down to absorb less moisture.
The chef recommends storing loose broccoli and cauliflower in a dry, tightly closed jar. According to the professional, aubergines should always be kept out of the refrigerator.
He also concluded the post by giving a tip for cleaning vegetables by mixing 1 tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water. Leave to soak for 15 minutes and then rinse very well.
