Pope Francis canonizes religious man by miracle in the Amazon

The Italian José Allamano, religious founder of the Consolata Missionaries congregation, was canonized after healing a dying native

The Pope Francis proclaimed this Sunday (20th), 14 new saints, during mass in St. Peter’s Square. Among these is Italian José Allamano, religious founder of the Consolata Missionaries congregation.

Pope Francis recognizes the miracle

In 1996, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, an event occurred involving an indigenous Yanomami called Sorinoattacked by a jaguar. Initially the Consolata missionaries helped him. Then, having noted the severity of the skull injuries, they prayed to the founder of their institute, Father Giuseppe Allamano.

Congratulations Muthoni, missionary from Kenya, was the first to provide assistance. “One of the natives came to call me because his brother-in-law had been injured by a jaguar. When I arrived at the village, there was a man lying on the dirt floor in a pool of blood,” she told RFI. “His skull was open and pieces of his brain were sticking out. I gently cleaned it with water and tied his scalp with the only fabric I had, my T-shirt,” said the missionary.

Taken to hospital

First, the natives were reluctant to take Sorino to the hospital. “The shamans told me that if Sorino died outside the village, he would never meet his ancestors again. The door would be closed to his spirit. In the end we managed to convince them that there was a chance he would survive,” said the missionary.

Upon arrival there, the Colombian neurosurgeon Mario Santacruz took care of him and described the patient’s critical condition. “Sorino was young and arrived at the hospital after three days of travel from his village. His injuries were serious, with loss of bone and brain substance. We performed the surgery, but he lost a large part of the brain in the frontal, parietal area , temporal and part of the occiput. To our surprise, he recovered well and remained without any disability.“, explained.

In the end, against all medical expectations, Sorino completely recovered his health. Then, miraculously, he returned to his community, living without any consequences.

When asked about belief in miracles, the neurosurgeon responded: “although my family upbringing was Catholic, at the time of the accident I was more focused on the scientific side. But after that case, I started to believe that miracles exist,” declared Santacruz.
