Recently, model Vera Viel, wife of presenter Rodrigo Faro, reported that she was diagnosed with thigh cancer, more precisely synovial sarcoma.
“Sarcoma is a type of cancer that originates in the body’s connective tissues, such as bones, muscles, fat, cartilage and blood vessels. There are many subtypes of sarcomas, classified into two main groups: soft tissue sarcomas and bone sarcomas”, explains the oncologist. Ramon Andrade de Mellovice-president of the Brazilian Society of Cancerology, postdoctoral clinical researcher at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (England) and honorary researcher at the University of Oxford (England).
The specific case of the model is classified as soft tissue sarcoma. The incidence of this type of cancer is low. It represents approximately 1% of all tumors in Brazil and, among sarcomas, 5 to 10% affect soft tissues. “The upper and lower extremities are most affected, so arms, forearms, hands, thighs, legs and feet are the areas where sarcoma appears the most,” says Ramon.
According to the oncologist, risk factors for sarcomas include radiation exposure (for example, previous cancer treatments), certain genetic conditions such as Li-Fraumeni syndrome, neurofibromatosis and Gardner syndrome, age ( sarcomas are more common in children and adolescents, but can occur in adults) and a family history of sarcomas.
“Signs and symptoms can vary depending on the location of the sarcoma, but include: a visible lump or mass under the skin; pain in the affected area, which may be constant or intermittent; swelling or enlargement in the affected region; and difficulty moving a limb if the sarcoma is in a location that affects the joints,” says Ramon Andrade de Mello.
The researcher highlights that, for the diagnosis of sarcomas, a physical examination and medical history are necessary, as well as: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) to visualize the extension of the tumor; x-rays to evaluate bone structure; and biopsy for histological analysis of suspected tissue.
As for the treatment, the doctor, who is also a doctoral professor at the Nove de Julho University, explains that there are a few possibilities. “Treatment may include surgery to remove the tumor, radiation therapy to destroy tumor cells, chemotherapy to treat more aggressive or metastatic sarcomas, and targeted therapies and immunotherapy, depending on the specific type of sarcoma,” he comments.
Among new developments in the treatment of sarcomas are advances in targeted therapies that attack specific characteristics of tumor cells and the use of immunotherapy to stimulate the immune system to fight cancer.
“Clinical studies also test new combinations of treatments and personalized approaches, which take into account the genetic characteristics of the tumor,” concludes Ramon.
