The National Secondary Education Examination (Enem) is one of the main entry points for those wishing to enter higher education. With just a few weeks to go until exams begin, the more than 5 million registered students are racing against time in this final stretch of preparation.
For those who don’t have a study strategy or remain uncertain, professors Rodrigo Basilio and Pedro Parada, specialists in university entrance exams, say the first step for students is to be clear about their goals.
“Since some institutions place different weights on knowledge areas, knowing which course and which university you want is essential to devising an effective strategy,” explains Basilio.
Apart from knowing the details of the institutes, it is also important to know the structure of the test and its evaluation method. ENEM has four knowledge areas: Languages, Mathematics, Humanities and Natural Sciences, as well as writing. And it uses a type of algorithm, called Item Response Theory (IRT), that strengthens pedagogical coherence at the time of correction.
“ENEM focuses on students’ abilities. And TRI is an assessment model that corrects for pedagogical inconsistencies. Thus, answering the most difficult questions correctly and getting the simplest ones wrong is interpreted as an inconsistency and the student’s score ends up being being taller. is a method ‘anti-football‘ that values knowledge and takes “luck” out of the game”, underlines Parada.
Leading a project called DISSECANDO, which helps high school students improve their results in entrance exams, Basílio and Parada listed other important tips for these last days before the test:
Organize your studies into a preparation program
More important than trying to learn new things, now is the time to review everything you’ve seen so far. Take notes to help you identify the day you reviewed each topic.
Take tests from previous years
This is a great way to study and helps identify common topics. Through this form of review, the candidate is able to identify their mistakes, review some content and improve skills that help them feel more confident.
If you need to prioritize one area, focus on writing
Enem is one of the selection processes in which the essay has the greatest weight, representing 20% of the final grade. Therefore, knowing how to write a clear, coherent and cohesive text is fundamental. The themes of the essay concern, for the most part, a social problem that affects a segment of the population. It is necessary to know how to look sensitively at the reality in which we live and know how to problematize the issue, identifying the dilemma presented, presenting and justifying one’s point of view and offering a proposal for intervention that complies with Human Rights.
Stay tuned for current events
Look for podcasts and journalistic texts that talk about social, political, economic, environmental, technological and cultural topics. This is because knowing how to interpret and take a position on the challenges that society is facing is fundamental.
Finally, it is worth remembering that this year Enem will be administered on 3 and 10 November, throughout the national territory.
