Nutritionist explains how using calming teas can help control symptoms of psoriasis, an autoimmune disease
THE psoriasis It is a chronic, autoimmune disease that affects between 1 and 3% of Brazilians and appears more frequently in women. Among its symptoms is inflammation of the skin, which causes red, scaly patches, usually in the areas of the elbows, knees and scalp. An itching or burning sensation may also appear.
According to nutritionist Priscila Schramm, a specialist in women’s health, psoriasis has no specific cause. “Psoriasis can be influenced by several factors, including stress, which often aggravates attacks. Emotional balance is essential in treatment, as is anti-inflammatory nutrition and the use of complementary therapies,” he explains.
And one such complementary therapy that can help is calming teas. While there is no cure for the disease itself, they help reduce symptoms, leading to a better quality of life.
“The consumption of calming herbal teas can play an important role. They help fight stress, which is closely associated with the worsening of the disease. Among the most recommended are chamomile, fennel and lemon balm, for their relaxing properties”, he comments .
