New research has found that there are two waves of changes associated with aging that hit us at different ages.
The second is known to everyone: at age 60, the consequences of the years of life on health become obvious. Many people start wearing glasses or hearing aids, and doctors discover that they have heart problems or diabetes (or warn that their risk of developing the disease has become very high). However, the results of a new study indicate that the first “dramatic” changes in the body occur much earlier.
Nonlinear dynamics
During their work, scientists from Stanford and Singapore universities tracked more than 135,000 molecules and microbes, the level of which could be used to judge the activity of cells and tissues. Biological samples for the study – from blood to skin swabs – were donated by 108 healthy volunteers aged 25 to 75. It turned out that the sharp increases in indicators were grouped around two age groups.
Simply put, the diseases associated with aging do not appear in us in a “linear” fashion, that is, they do not increase gradually as we age. Instead, there are two “explosions”: one of them occurs around age 60. The second was a surprise and – an astonishing coincidence! — fits into the assessments of the World Health Organization: according to WHO experts, youth is giving way to maturity…

…44 years old
The study confirmed the reports of many people that around this age they notice significant changes in their body – from a stronger hangover to serious injuries in situations where previously they would get away with a bruise or a minor sprain.
The first powerful wave of aging gives rise to the period of perimenopause or menopause in both men and women. At this stage, the activity of cellular pathways responsible for the breakdown of alcohol decreases – after that, its digestion is more difficult for the body than usual. Lipid metabolism also changes, which leads to more active weight gain and the appearance of fatty plaques in the vessels.
