Pregnancy after 40: here are the health precautions

Experts clarify the health risks for mother and child during pregnancy after 40 years of age

This week, 44-year-old supermodel Gisele Bündchen announced that she is pregnant with her third child. In this age group, pregnancy requires specific medical monitoring and particular attention to both the health of the mother and the development of the child.

Gynecologist Flávia Mambrini explains that “pregnancy after the age of 40 carries greater risks due to factors such as the decrease in the quality and quantity of oocytes”. This can increase the chances of chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome. Additionally, the risk of pregnancy complications such as hypertension and diabetes is also higher.

Regenerative gynecology Lais Gonzales warns of the likelihood of complications such as gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, premature birth and low birth weight babies. However, “with medical advances and adequate prenatal care, it is possible to closely monitor any risks and ensure the best care for the mother and baby,” she advises.

Pregnancy after 40

Although fertility declines after age 35, getting pregnant after age 40 has become increasingly common. This is due to procedures that allow pregnancy after this age. Technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and ovulation induction are alternatives for those facing difficulties, but the decision to seek help must be made with the guidance of a professional.

“After this age, a woman produces fewer eggs and their quality also decreases, which makes conception more difficult. However, more and more women are seeking fertility treatment and many manage to get pregnant with medical support,” explains the gynecologist Cesar Patez.

Health care

According to gynecologist César Patez, specific care of blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol is essential, due to the increased risk of gestational hypertension, diabetes and other conditions that can impact the health of the mother and baby. Prenatal tests must be even more rigorous and continuous monitoring allows for early diagnosis and intervention in case of possible complications.

Another important care during pregnancy over 40 is oral health. Dentist Cesar Rodrigues, specialist in implantology and cosmetic dentistry, explains that pregnant women are more likely to develop periodontal diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

“These conditions can compromise both the health of the mother and the child,” warns the specialist. She recommends basic care such as regular brushing, flossing and dentist appointments in the early months of pregnancy to avoid complications.

Rodrigues also emphasizes the need to pay attention to bruxism, which can intensify during pregnancy due to metabolic changes and increased emotional tension. To do this he suggests the use of muscle relaxant plates and the practice of relaxation techniques under medical supervision.

Another important point is nutrition. During pregnancy, nutritionist Fernanda Larralde, of Bio Mundo, emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet to ensure the healthy development of the baby. He recommends eating nutrient-rich foods, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains, as well as staying hydrated and controlling your caffeine and sugar consumption.

For women like Gisele, this pregnancy can be the realization of a dream, a belated gift. “Every pregnancy is unique and at the age of 44 this experience can be even more special. What matters is planning, support and medical monitoring so that this period can be lived with joy and safety”, concludes César Patez.
