“I devoted myself completely to the character,” reflects the 91-year-old actor

If there’s one thing Brazil always excels at, it’s television drama. Undeniably, many of our soap operas are remembered with great affection both in Brazil and abroad, and one of these is certainly the successful Chocolate com Pimenta (2003), rerun several times both on Globo’s Vale a Pena Ver de Novo and on Canal Alive. One of the reasons this soap opera is popular with audiences is its many amazing characters, including Ludovico, played by the wonderful Ary Fontoura.

With more than 50 soap operas under his belt, Ary Fontoura says that this work has also remained strongly marked in his memory. The actor only participated in a few chapters of the work, but his participation was so intense that the public never forgot it either. In an interview, he commented more on the work on the plot.

His character, Ludovico, is a cameo, but remains well imprinted in the public’s memory. Why do you think this happened?

“Ludovico is a very nice character throughout the story, he is a good-natured boy, who likes Ana Francisca (Mariana Ximenes) and decides to marry her knowing that she was about to die, to leave his fortune to her and the child. It was really a very well written role and, even though it was short, it appears in the soap as a great participation. I really enjoyed playing this character, especially because it was once again under the direction of Jorge Fernando .a director who I have always appreciated very much, with memorable works.”

Were there any big challenges in playing the character?

“The biggest challenge perhaps came from the fact that, at the same time I was chosen for the soap opera, I was in the cast of ‘O Sítio do Pica-Pau Amarelo’. I played Colonel Teodorico, who was the exact opposite of the character Walcyr Carrasco offered me. My challenge was to play both characters at the same time.”

What do you remember about the work that makes up this character?

“Ludovico was very well thought out by the author and directed very well by Jorge Fernando. I dedicated myself completely to the character and the result was very positive for me, because I really managed to capture certain things that I thought the character could do. . Teamwork is always a lot of fun to do, and this work on ‘Chocolate com Pimenta’ was really very special.”

And what do you remember about Ludovico’s plot and the recordings?

“The recordings of the telenovela always took place with great joy. We went to Buenos Aires, where the exteriors of the first chapters were made and the group was very cohesive, happy to travel and to be in the telenovela, a wonderful cast When the behind the scenes is fantastic, it is inevitable that the work appears to the public, and in ‘Chocolate com Pimenta’ it happened: everyone had their part, all the characters were covered by Walcyr with excellent scenes, the work required place in the maximum simplicity, loyalty and friendship”.

What were the best collaborations with the actors of the cast that you had during your participation in the soap opera?

“I didn’t know Mariana Ximenes, it was the first time I saw her and it was love at first sight, a love that continues to this day. We are very good friends. She was practically at the beginning of her work within Globo, perhaps the my experience helped her a little, above all, the friendship we made with Mariana is a very sweet person, a very good actress, an excellent person, it was very easy to work with her and I think she was one of the great collaborations within this, without a doubt.”

Which scene or sequence made the biggest impression on you in “Chocolate com Pimenta”?

“The scene of Ludovico’s death was the one that marked me the most. When he died there was a whole atmosphere around the work and I gave a lot of myself in that moment, managing to create a beautiful scene. I has remained in the memory among the countless soap operas I have done.”

Finally, a curiosity: do you like reviewing your works?

“I like it, yes. I suffer a little, because I’m very strict with myself, I always think I could have done more. But I think: now that it’s over, I’ll leave it aside for next time, let’s go work on the next job.”

Currently, “Chocolate com Pimenta” is available in full on Globoplay streaming.
