The consumer law specialist explains the tips to avoid getting into trouble by taking advantage of Black Friday promotions
In Black Fridayeveryone wants to take advantage of the discounts offered by the most disparate shops to purchase those products they’ve wanted for a long time, right? The problem, however, is that this period of promotions also brings with it several scam attempts and other problems outside the legal parameters.
For this reason, according to Daniella Torres, professor of law at the Centro Universitário de Brasília (CEUB) and specialist in consumer law, planning and knowledge are essential allies, both for suppliers and consumers.
“Consumers should plan ahead, researching the products they want to buy and checking prices before Black Friday itself. It’s important not to get carried away by the impulse of the day,” he says.
When shopping online and taking advantage of Black Friday promotions, the CEUB professor recommends the following tips:
Be wary of excessively low prices
First of all, although Black Friday has very attractive promotions, it is best to be wary if the price is too low for the product. This could mean that it does not have a good origin or quality.
“Although discounts of 50%, 40% or even 60% are frequent during Black Friday, be careful when you find offers that seem exceptionally low,” says the expert.
Understand the conditions and possible failures
Some stores offer products with small defects that do not affect their functionality, such as scratches or dents. However, they must inform you clearly about these issues, so always make sure to ask and evaluate this.
Guarantee a safe purchase
Research sites. “This includes consulting government resources, such as the website ‘consumidor.gov.br’, to see if there are any complaints regarding a particular website, store or supplier,” Daniella points out.
Check e-commerce security
Check whether the website has a security certificate, usually indicated by a lock in the browser. Also, make sure your sales site URL starts with “HTTPS,” which indicates a secure connection.
Beware of prohibited or abusive practices
When taking advantage of Black Friday promotions, you should also keep an eye out for practices prohibited by the Consumer Protection Code. One case is parity, when a website requires the purchase of another product to get a discount.
“Also be careful of misleading advertising, such as advertising that lists product prices along with unit values in small print,” he adds. In each of these cases, please report it.
Check delivery times
Finally, find out about delivery times before finalizing the purchase, whether it is Black Friday or any other time. Make sure the deadline meets your needs and expectations, avoiding unpleasant surprises.
