Skin cancer: see treatment and how to identify the disease

Self-examination and daily use of sunscreen are essential to prevent the development of skin cancer

During summer the skin is more exposed to factors such as intense solar radiation, heat, sweat and humidity, which require specific care to keep it healthy and protected. According to data from the National Cancer Institute (INCA), the skin cancer It is the most constant type in Brazil, corresponding to 30% of malignant tumors registered each year.

“The sun, through ultraviolet rays, causes a change in cellular DNA, triggering cancer, which we call neoplasia”, says JosĂ© Roberto Fraga Filho, dermatologist full member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) and clinical director of the Institute Fraga of Dermatology.

Heat also leads to dehydration of the skin, making it drier and more prone to eczema and infections. According to the doctor, in addition to genetic problems, prolonged and repeated exposure to the sun and, obviously, without adequate protection, remains the main factor in skin cancer.

Prevention

Treatments vary depending on the stage and type of cancer and range from cauterization, acid applications, liquid nitrogen to surgery, which is much more frequent. Therefore, Fraga emphasizes that we must always be aware of the spots that appear on our body.

For this reason there is a rule that helps identify moles and malignant spots: the i ABCDE rule. The ABCDE method is a type of self-examination that takes into account what to look for in spots and blemishes that appear on the skin. I am:

  • A – Asymmetry
  • B – Irregular edges
  • C – Different colors in the same point
  • D – Spot diameter greater than 0.6 cm
  • E – Evolution, whether the mole grows or not

Skin care

To avoid problems, the treatment is simple. In addition to using sunscreen daily, even on cloudy and cold days, the best method is to avoid exposure during the times when ultraviolet rays are most intense, i.e. from 10:00 to 16:00.

According to the dermatologist, keeping your skin protected in summer helps prevent damage such as blemishes, premature aging and even skin cancer. Furthermore, taking care of hydration and using the right products contribute to healthier and brighter-looking skin.
