The data comes from the Mortality Tables 2023 survey, published this Friday the 29th by IBGE
Life expectancy in Brazil increased to 76.4 years in 2023, according to data from the mortality table published on Friday 29 by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). This number represents an increase of 11.3 months from the previous year, exceeding the pre-pandemic level.

For men the increase was more significant: 12.4 months, increasing the average from 72.1 years to 73.1 years. Among women, life expectancy increased from 78.8 years to 79.7 years, an increase of approximately 10.5 months.
According to Izabel Marri, director of Studies and Analysis of Demographic Dynamics at IBGE, “the increase in the number of deaths in Brazil and around the world due to the coronavirus pandemic has reduced life expectancy at birth in 2020 and 2021, reaching the level of 72.8 in this last year. The recovery of this indicator from 2022 reflects the reduction in excess deaths caused by the pandemic, for both sexes”.
Historical progress
In 1940, the average life expectancy in the country was just 45.5 years. Since then there has been a leap of 30.9 years, with advances of 30.2 years for men and 31.4 years for women.
Another data highlighted by the IBGE is the decline in infant mortality. In 1940 the rate was 146.6 deaths per thousand births. In 2023 this number has dropped to 12.5, or a 91.5% reduction. Infant mortality (children under 5) has also decreased, from 212.1 per thousand births in 1940 to 14.7 in 2023.
Excess mortality and male longevity
Excess male mortality remains high, a phenomenon that reflects a greater risk of death for young men from external causes, such as homicides and accidents. In 2023, a 20-year-old man was 4.1 times more likely to die before age 25 than a woman in the same age group.
For older adults, longevity also showed improvements. In 1940, a 60-year-old person was expected to live another 13.2 years. In 2023, this expectation has risen to 22.5 years, or 20.7 years for men and 24.0 years for women. At age 80, life expectancy has increased from 4.5 years (women) and 4.0 years (men) in 1940 to 9.4 and 8.3 years, respectively, in 2023.
