The Alma Mater, from Santa Catarina, won the 4th Copa Cerveja Brasil
The fourth Copa Cerveja Brasil awarded Alma Mater, from Cervejaria Stannis, based in Jaraguá do Sul (SC), as the best craft beer in Brazil in 2024. The independent competition was organized by the Brazilian Craft Beer Association (Abracerva) . The winner was awarded the “Best of Show” gold medal, considered the best in the competition by the specialized jury.
Classified as a sour and wild beer, with a clear appearance and mixed fermentation, the drink is the result of a blonde ale fermented with conventional yeast and Brettanomyces yeast.
Alma Mater was deemed the best craft beer in the country among 268 national labels ranked for the final decision. According to Eric de Lima, marketing coordinator of the brewery, it is an experimental beer, not yet consumed commercially.
“We are working to receive it as soon as possible. It is already on pre-sale in our online store with shipping expected for the first orders starting from 01/20”, he explains. The 375 ml bottle will cost R$79.80.
This beer was matured for 6 months in oak barrels, developing amazing complexity and flavor. “With spontaneous fermentation, it captures the essence of the flora in the barrels, offering an unforgettable sensory experience: fruity notes and a balanced acidity that will delight any lover of sour and diverse beers,” reads the description on the site.
The ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Academia da Cerveja, in Sao Paulo. “We have achieved our main goal, bringing together market partners to celebrate the excellence of domestic production,” says Laura Aguiar, Director of Knowledge and Culture at Ambev.
Before the national competition, regional phases were held in the five Brazilian regions, for a total of 1,060 beer samples.
“The level of the competition was very high. The medal winners reflect the quality and diversity that make up Brazilian craft beer,” celebrates Gilberto Tarantino, president of Abracerva in an interview with CNN.
Silver and Bronze
The “Best of Show” silver medal went to Canoa Quebrada, produced by 277 Craft Beer, from Foz do Iguaçu (PR). The drink is inspired by the German style of gose with the addition of cashews, giving the drink a Brazilian twist. It uses wheat malt, with low bitterness, which turns out to be acidic, with a salty finish.
Walfänger Doppelbock, from Cervejaria Walfänger, from Ribeirão Preto (SP) won the bronze medal “Best of Show”.
