How to decorate a winter garden for the New Year: advice from a landscaper

However, many gardeners believe that with the onset of cold weather, their plot loses its attractiveness. But that’s not true at all! Landscape architect Ilya Mochalov explains how to create a festive atmosphere in a winter garden.

When creating a garden project, a landscape architect thinks about the winter aspect of the garden in advance: places conifers in areas without snow storage, for example at the entrances to buildings, thinks about plants with decorative fruits that become accents in winter, select plants with colored or textured bark. With good planning, the structure of the garden can be read in winter and the decorative effect is preserved.

Use natural materials to create unique jewelry. Coniferous branches, cones, rowan berries and dried flowers will be excellent material for making wreaths, garlands and arrangements. You can hang such decorations on doors, windows or place them on tables and benches.

It is also possible to hang ice decorations on the trees. Such items can be purchased ready-made or built by yourself with the whole family.

Many plants can be cut into shapes: there is a whole direction in landscaping: topiary. It can be a spherical thuja, a cube-cut linden or a cone-shaped common spruce. These plants become real highlights of the garden in winter. The shapes of the plants play an important role in its design. Grasses often have panicles after the season, which in winter can not only not be removed, but also be beautifully covered with snow.

In addition, any garden will look spectacular in winter thanks to the color of the shoots. There are various shrubs and trees with red, yellow and orange shoots that create bright accents and look elegant both alone and in the overall composition – for example, Siberian dogwood or various varieties of willows.

Decorative lighting is the quickest and most efficient solution. Large deciduous trees entwined with a light garland, a Christmas tree with decorations and lighting, accent lighting on arbors and canopies – all these details increase the attractiveness of the area, we want to s approach them and look at them.

Fairy lights, lanterns and LED strips can add warmth and comfort to the garden even on the coldest days. Place them along paths, tie them around trees and shrubs, and decorate gazebos and pergolas. If you have a pond or artificial fountain, light it to make it the focal point.

You can achieve interesting effects using slit lamps. For decorative garden lighting, garlands with warm light are more suitable: you should choose lamps with a light temperature of 2700-3500 K. It is better if all decorative light sources have the same light temperature.

If winter brings you a lot of snow, create snow sculptures. It can be a snowman, a Christmas tree, a bear or any other fairy-tale character. Add colorful elements like a hat, scarf and bucket to make your designs even more eye-catching.

Don’t forget garden furniture: even in winter, it can look comfortable and welcoming. Cover chairs and armchairs with bright blankets, place pillows, and place candles in glass candlesticks nearby. This design will create a feeling of comfort and privacy.
