Fan or air conditioning: find out which one to choose for your home

The expert highlights the advantages and disadvantages that these devices, so popular in summer, can offer to our health

With the arrival of the high temperature season, the company of a fan or air conditioning it becomes something indispensable. However, one question that may arise is which device to choose. The choice between one and the other generally takes into account financial issues and, of course, the results that these devices offer.

According to the otolaryngologist Cristiane Passos Dias Levy, of the Paulista Hospital, specialized in ear, nose and throat health, it is necessary to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages that fans and air conditioning offer, according to the individual needs of each consumer .

“Both have advantages, but also disadvantages. In the case of air conditioning, you remove the hot air from the room and replace it with cold air. This happens through a refrigeration cycle, which filters the air, and this is very useful for people with allergies, however, it can also dry the air very much, also irritating the mucous membranes, if kept at a very low temperature.

As for fans, they circulate the air, helping to maintain a more pleasant room temperature without altering the humidity of the air. However, when directed towards the body, they also dry out the airways, in the same way as air conditioning. Therefore there are positive and negative factors in both”, underlines the expert.

Hygiene is key

What they have in common, however, is that the doctor emphasizes the need to periodically clean these appliances. “This, in my opinion, is the most predominant factor that those who use this type of equipment should take into account”, underlines the doctor.

In the case of air conditioning, he explains that if the filter is not kept clean it can spread germs and bacteria and contaminate the entire environment. In the case of the fan it is important that the entire environment in which it is located is very clean. Otherwise, dust and mites will circulate in the environment.

Once these precautions have been taken, in her opinion, the choice between one or another equipment depends on the individual needs and personal comfort of each person.

Tips for maintenance and cleaning

To concretely guarantee the effectiveness of these devices, especially with regards to the health benefits, the doctor lists some advice:

  • Always keep the rooms well ventilated, i.e. windows and doors open, with air circulation;
  • Clean air conditioning filters as well as fan blades and grills regularly to ensure air quality;
  • In very dry environments, consider the possibility of combining the use of air conditioning and/or fans with humidifiers, to balance the humidity of the air;
  • Avoid placing the airflow from the fan directly onto your body for long periods to prevent the airways from drying out;
  • Try to keep the air conditioning temperature moderate, between 23°C and 26°C, to avoid temperature changes when entering and exiting air-conditioned environments.
  • Drink water regularly to stay hydrated, especially in air-conditioned environments, which can dry the air.
  • Maintain air conditioning equipment periodically to ensure proper operation and air quality.
