A favorite not only of Gracyanne, but also of most Brazilians, the egg is surrounded by controversy regarding its consumption. After all, is eating eggs good or bad?
“Eggs are, without a doubt, a food rich in nutritional benefits and can be a great addition to your eating routine. It is highly nutritious and offers a wide range of essential nutrients for health,” explains Renata Varkulja, coordinator of Clinical Nutrition at Santa Paula Hospital, in an interview with Earth.
According to her, the food is low in calories, about 75 kcal per unit, and contains monounsaturated lipids, considered “good fats”, which benefit cardiovascular health. In addition to offering:
- Source of proteins with high biological value: The egg contains excellent quality proteins, with 6.5 g per unit, essential for the synthesis of hormones, enzymes and muscles. Protein also promotes satiety, which can aid in weight loss;
- Rich in vitamins and minerals: Eggs are an important source of vitamins A, D, E, B complex (such as biotin, riboflavin and choline) and minerals such as iron, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium and selenium. These nutrients play a fundamental role in maintaining the immune system, fighting free radicals and strengthening general health;
- Benefits for vision: the egg contains lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants that accumulate in the retina and help protect against eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration, as well as improving vision health;
- Brain health: the Choline, found in egg yolk, is critical for brain health, aiding in the development of memories and overall brain function. Regular egg consumption may reduce the risk of dementia;
- Blood sugar control and benefits for diabetics: eggs have a low glycemic index and contain few carbohydrates, making them a good option for people with diabetes, as they help control blood sugar;
- Muscle performance and prevention of atrophy: The presence of leucine, an essential amino acid, promotes muscle mass gain and helps reduce age-related muscle loss, an important benefit, especially for older adults.
Damage
Despite their many benefits, it is common for eggs to be remembered for their harms, particularly those related to their high cholesterol content.
“According to the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, daily cholesterol intake should not exceed 300 mg, of which each egg unit contains between 50 and 250 mg per unit, depending on the source and size,” explains Varkulja.
However, it is clarified that the main precautions to be taken are: avoid excess fat in the preparation and do not consume eggs with liquid yolks, due to the risk of contamination.
“Raw eggs contain avidin, a substance that can make it difficult for the body to fully absorb proteins. Furthermore, consuming raw or undercooked eggs can increase the risk of salmonella infection,” explains the professional.
