The doctor warns of the inflammation that affected the player Ganso: “It could cause more serious problems”

Paulo Ganso is away from the field after diagnosis; in an interview with CARAS Brasil, Dr. Marcelo Bergamo explains the player’s condition

The footballer Paolo Henrique de Lima, better known as Ganso (35), currently at Fluminense, was removed from activity after being diagnosed with a small case of myocarditis. The diagnosis came after a series of tests carried out during the team’s pre-season and the probable cause is a serious flu contracted in November last year. In an interview with CARAS BrazilDr. Marcelo Bergamocardiologist, explains the athlete’s condition.

In a press release, Fluminense FC informed of Paulo Ganso’s condition and reiterated that the player does not present any symptoms. If the clinical condition is no longer detected, the champion will return to his activity on the field.

According to Dr. Marcelo Bergamo, cardiologist, myocarditis is the inflammation of the myocardium, which is the cardiac muscle, the “wall” of the heart, responsible for pumping blood to the body. The causes of this condition are different.

“This inflammation disrupts this pumping and can cause more serious problems, such as arrhythmia […] Viral infections, such as influenza, COVID-19, and Coxsackie viruses, are the most common agents, but other causes include bacterial infections, autoimmune diseases, exposure to toxins, and drug reactions. It is important to identify the specific cause to define the best treatment”, explains.

The cardiologist emphasizes that inflammation can be cured in most cases: “Heart failure is a complication that can be mild, moderate or severe, in addition to arrhythmias which can be serious and caused by the presence of inflammation of the heart muscle.”

“Myocarditis is treatable, yes, in most cases. Rest and sometimes medication are necessary for the condition to remit within a maximum of 6 months. It is at this point that we normally repeat the MRI to see if there has been an improvement. Sometimes drugs are needed to treat heart failure if the heart becomes enlarged,” concludes Dr. Marcelo Bergamo analyzing the conditions of the player Ganso.
