The 65-year-old artist talks openly about hair loss on his social media
The singer and influencer Gretchen, 65, surprised her followers this Wednesday (22) by sharing images of her natural hair, without the use of mega hair. The artist revealed that he suffers from alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss, but stressed that this does not affect his self-esteem.
“Not all women have the courage to show themselves without mega hair. And, above all, the woman who has alopecia, but I don’t care,” the singer declared on her social media.
Alopecia can be caused by several factors, as explained by dermatologist Claudia Gomes dos Santos, of the Nipo-Brasileiro Hospital (HNipo). According to the specialist, the condition can be classified into: non-scarring, when there is a possibility of hair recovery, and cicatricial, in which the loss is permanent.
Some of the most common types include:
Androgenetic alopecia (hereditary baldness): It is linked to genetic and hormonal factors. It is common in both men and women and is not considered a disease in the traditional sense, but rather a hereditary condition.
Alopecia areata: It is an autoimmune condition, in which the immune system attacks hair follicles, causing hair loss in specific areas or, in severe cases, throughout the body. This type is considered an autoimmune disease.
Cicatricial alopecia: It involves the permanent destruction of hair follicles due to inflammation or disease of the scalp. It is a rarer form and can be caused by infections, trauma or other diseases.
Telogen effluvium: This is temporary hair loss, usually caused by physical or emotional stress, hormonal changes, illness or nutritional deficiencies. While it is not a disease in itself, it is a manifestation of something that may be out of balance in the body.
Among the most common causes of hair loss are genetic factors, stress, hormonal changes, thyroid disorders, poor nutrition and even excessive use of chemicals. Events such as Covid-19 can also trigger or worsen the problem.
Early diagnosis is essential for adequate treatment. “There are topical and oral drugs capable of stimulating hair growth and strengthening, as well as vitamins and specific therapies,” explained the specialist.
