How to correctly preserve breast milk? The pediatrician explains

How to keep breast milk?

Breast milk, when preserved, can be kept both in the refrigerator and in the freezer. According to the pediatrician, Dr. Fernanda Catharino, “The milk stored in the refrigerator should remain for 12 hours. If the mother wants to leave the milk in the freezer, the recommended time is a maximum of 15 days. The ideal is always to keep the milk separate from other foods.”

To defrost the breast milk, the bottle must be removed from the freezer or freezer and placed in a water bath, in hot water, with the fire already off. So the bottle should be slowly occupied to mix its components until there is ice. Finally, the milk must not be boiled or heated in the microwave. This type of heating can destroy protective factors.

A good advice to control the correct temperature is to drip a few drops inside the wrist. Milk should be about 40º, slightly above human body temperature.

When thawed, remove only the quantity that will be consumed by the child. The rest should be kept in the refrigerator for a maximum of 12 hours. After this period, the milk in the refrigerator should be discarded.

How to serve the child

Breast milk should be offered to the child in a cup, a cup or a spoon. At this moment, the child should be supported and as seated as possible, with a head and neck stopped with the body. The edge of the container should be placed on the lower lip of the child, letting the milk touch the lip. The child will put his tongue out and make the licking movements, swallow the milk. Do not pour the milk into the child’s mouth to prevent him from suffocating.
