According to researchers, the green and natural environment has half of the effectiveness of pain relievers in pain relief
You have probably seen this phrase (or variation) circular on social networks: “When I do through a traumatic event, and now I have to take a trip to reconnect with nature”. The trend, which has become viral in TiktokPlay with the possibility of healing or relieving pain with the help of outdoor activities. On social networks, it was just a theory. But, according to the researchers of University of Vienna, The method can be really effective!
Nature against pain
A study, published in the magazine ‘Natural communications‘, he used a functional device of magnetic resonance imaging to detect the brain activities of 49 people, while they received electric shocks. At the end of the experiment, the participants reported trying less pain while looking at the images of the landscape. The effect, however, did not happen when scenes of urban daily life appeared, such as offices or buildings.
But the discoveries of the researchers didn’t stop there! With the help of artificial intelligence, scholars have been able to observe changes in the brain responses concerning pain. These changes show a reduction in sensory brain signs that detect discomfort after exposure to photos of nature. According to the researchers, this is due to the fact that the landscapes have distracted people from shocks.
“Our study is the first to provide tests of the brain exams that this is not only a placebo effect – led by the beliefs and expectations of the people who nature is good for them – instead, the brain is reacting less to the information on where the pain comes and how intense it is”, “,”, “ declared the main author of the study and the doctoral student at the University of Vienna, Max Steiningerin a press release.
The author, however, explained that nature can reduce half of the pain compared to the effects of analgesic drugs. “People with pain should certainly continue to take any medicine that has been prescribed. But we hope that in the future the alternative ways of relieving pain, how to experience nature, can be used to help improve pain control”, warned.
