Do it yourself: a rainbow carpet to welcome you with joy

Turn a simple rug into a colorful piece for your front door with a little paint and patience. Print the free pattern below to create this rainbow piece in any color scheme you like.

materials and tools

• plain carpet
• rainbow pattern
• scissors
• Tape
• permanent pen
• Scissors
• brooches
• Brush tool
• Acrylic paints for exteriors

Instructions

Start with a simple rug. Print out the free rainbow pattern, glue it with ribbon and cut out the design. Pin it to the carpet and, using pins, trace the pattern with a permanent marker.

Use sturdy scissors to cut the rainbow-shaped piece.

Cut the rainbow pattern into separate pieces and attach them all back to the rug.

Paint the first three colors, applying the paint to the fibers of the piece, paint two coats of each color, letting it dry in between. Remove the pattern and let it dry completely.

Attach three more bows on top of the colors painted on the rainbow.

Paint the last three colors, with two coats and let dry.

Remove the pattern and touch up the sections that were not fully painted the first time. Let it dry completely before taking it out the door.
