Tour to listen to the contraction of the crystals and see the petroglifi […]

After a renovation of more than a year and an investment of $ 17 million, Tierra, the hotel boutique in the region of the Atacama desert of northern Chile, will reopen again with the news.

Rustic and in harmony with the external scenario, Tierra Atacama is known not only for its sustainable hotels in remote destinations such as Chilean Patagonia and Chiloé, but also for the exclusive excursions offered to guests.

Another ease is the system with all transfers, tours, meals and alcohol included in daily rates.

In the most arid destination on the planet, the starry sky and the volcanoes are no longer news. But your desert must not be the same as everyone.

New accommodation

The Tierra hotels on the Chilean network are known for its plants which are harmoniously integrated with the external landscape. In Atacama, for example, the rooms have decorations with plots and colors inspired by the old Adobe walls and the autochthonous plants gardens.

The reformulation process of the hotel, reopened in April 2025, was led by the founder of the Network Miguel Purcell, accompanied by professionals who worked on the original project of the company, such as the architect Matías González and the interior design specialist Carolina Delpiano.

Therefore, the current building follows a palette of color with shades of greenery, earth and blue inspired by landscapes and night sky. The walls, floors, ceilings and other elements have been renewed with typical materials and plots of the region.

In the common areas, the restaurant won a Show kitchen This allows you to close the preparation of the recipes up close, in addition to the cellar The cellarWith a selection of labels from the best exponents of Chilean viticulture (which, in this case, does not need explanations).

The old 32 Tierra Atacama accommodations have been transformed into 28, since eight of them are now four large Deluxe suite, which offer differentials such as the living area and the bathtub. The Eastern hosts were reinvented and those of the Ponient category have started to have new voices and larger terraces.

The property also bet on updates to further expand the comfort and privacy levels of its two family apartments, in separate areas that host up to six guests each and have private swimming pools.

And wherever you look, you have the Vulcano Libancabur as a natural scenario.

Atacama Desert Adventure

Everything is very beautiful, but Tierra Atacama wants to see her guest outside.

To this end, the hotel has a team of multidisciplinary guides that organizes personalized excursions based on the preferences and physical conditions of each passenger.

The options range from basic tours, such as those of the Highlands and Geyderes of the Tatio, recently released for this new season.

One of the news is the half -day tour of Valleitito, a slight walk in the Salt mountain range that offers a unique experience: listening to the process of expansion and contraction of the crystals, caused by temperature changes. Not to mention the visit to an abandoned bus near the old salt mines and the descent of a huge sand dune.

Another just released tour is a visit to the Purilactis valley. The path of intermediate difficulty occurs in the upper part of the mountains and crosses scenarios such as the Petroglifi Yerbas Buenas and a visit to the Valle dell’Acubaleno, made up of walls of multicolored stones.

For the most intrepid, Tierra Atacama also offers personalized private tours, a sort of side B of the desert.

Much beyond wages and lunar valleys, only to appoint some of the most popular destination attractions, there is a different atacama that you can know on alternative paths from less tourist areas.

For the fourth time in San Pedro de Atacama, the village that acts as a base for those who visit the region, I made an alternative path to the famous famous Big dune From Valle de la Luna, I visited an abandoned city and I walked among the high concentration canyons of wild animals.

One of the salient points is Copacoya (difficulties of 8 km long / high), a walk surrounding the mountain that appoints the path, on the back of the Tatio Geyser, 90 km north of San Pedro. The activity is demanding, but acts as acclimatization for those who will have to face more radical attractions such as the climbs of the Vulcani Toco and Guskbur.

There are about (demanding) five hours of walking, in deep valleys, canyons and curious rock formations that strengthen the fame of the extraterrestrial scenario of Atacama.

Human beings are rare there, but the animal life on the path is abundant, with great chances of seeing the Vicuins (Camelides Andine) and VizCachas groups, a rodent similar to the chinchillà.

Another scenic track is the one from the wounded to the great Rio (12 km of extension and medium-high difficulties).

Starting from 45 kilometers from San Pedro and 49 kilometers from Tatio, the path follows the water course of the Peñarili river, passing through ancient fields of Pastoris, Canyon and even an abandoned village.

The 5h walk starts over four thousand meters and follows the earth with variations of altitude and changes of scenario, towards Río Grande.

Almost at the end of the crossing, about 4.5 kilometers from Río Grande, the village of Peñarili is the highlight of the path. In this community you can visit some volcanic stones, abandoned in the 90s.

Valle de la luna

On the same trip, I also made Los Aches Trail (45 minutes of walking and low difficulty), an alternative path in Moon Valley, one of the most popular natural attractions in Atacama.

But instead of being where all tourists must accompany the sunset, this short and without too much difficulty are suitable for seeing the back of the Gran Duna.

The walk is located inside the Los Flamencos National Reserve, an area of almost 74,000 hectares that also houses other classics Atacama, such as Salar do Atacama and Miseti – Miñiges and Chaxes Lagoas.
