The initiative supported by UNIPAR uses PVC pellets in creating pieces and generates opportunities for the participants in the workshop
Summary
The project in Rio Grande da Serra produces sustainable bras and mammary prostheses for mastectomized women, combining solidarity, self -esteem and generation of income, supported by UNPAR and local NGOs.
A project that combines solidarity, empathy and sustainability has mobilized the voluntary seamstresses in Rio Grande da Serra, in the Paulist ABC region. It is the seminar of sustainable sewing, an initiative dedicated to the creation of bras adapted to breast prostheses, intended for women who have undergone a mastectomy-a procedure which can be essential in the treatment of breast cancer, and is often followed by difficulty in accessing appropriate prostheses, if due to limits of resources or lack of special support.
According to the data issued by the Brazilian Journal of Plastic Surgery, between 2015 and 2020, the Unified Health System of Brazil (Sus) recorded a total of 204,569 breast cancer surgery, of which 43% were mastectomie, about 88,000 of these procedures. In the same period, 17,927 reconstructive plastic interventions were performed with plants after this procedure and only 20.52% of mastectomized women were subjected to immediate reconstruction with plants.
At the last meeting, held at the headquarters of the NGO Prophavi – Association Promotion in favor of life -, in Rio Grande Da Serra, the group of seamstress presented the different formats of molds that developed for the prostheses and started the preparation of 70 pieces. Overall, 50 kg of PVC pallets were collected, donated by Dacarto, a company composed in PVC, which will be transformed into breast prostheses surrounded by an acrylic and cotton blanket.
Commanded by the designer Esmeralda Chagas, with the support of the creative hands of NGOs, the seamstresses were able to create more prostheses and special bras, has experienced the feeling of participating in an action that contributes to women to recover self -esteem and shine of the eyes. “It is a project that speaks of a serious and sensitive question in a light and delicious way, and I feel honored to be part of it,” adds Denise Santos, who has undergone a Mastectomy surgery a few years ago.
Sewing that transforms life
More than enable the seamstresses, the idea is to inspire them. For Luiza Maria de Jesus Santos, president of NGOs, who has also dealt with a diagnosis of cancer, the project is the realization of a dream of helping women who need to feel good and are unable to make this investment. “When I received the diagnosis of cancer and had to undergo surgery, I was very distressed. My doctor advised me not to put the prosthesis, even if I was able.
The workshop is part of the Movement project in EM, an initiative that has the support of UNIPAR, a chemical and petrochemical society and the consultative advice of Santo André and Cubatão, consisting of volunteers operating in the communities near the units of society and promote the dialogue between society and the local population. In addition to promoting welcome, the action also opens ways to the economic transformation of participants by evaluating manual work and creating income generation opportunities.
“We realized that we could go further and authorize women to create these prostheses and bras, creating a support network with Profavi,” says Waessa Santana, coordinator of communication at Unipar Santo André.
