A system trained with biological data is transforming what we understand as evolution as much as possible

Using a linguistic model based on artificial intelligence called ESM3 (model of the evolutionary scale 3), the evolutionary scale of the US company has managed to create a fluorescent protein that does not exist in nature. This is an important milestone for science, since the molecule has managed to simulate the equivalent of 500 million years of natural evolution.

Creation, called ESMGFP, belongs to a “family” known as green fluorescent proteins (green fluorescent or GFP fluorescent protein). GFP can be found in some bodies, such as some species of jellyfish. In fact, the discovery of these proteins obtained the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008.

A singular protein

Although I share part of its structure with natural fluorescent proteins, Esmgfp is not a copy. It is a molecule with a different general design. It is interesting to note that this difference is not accidental: the protein was designed by ESM3 as if it were the result of a natural evolutionary process that simply followed a distinct path from others.

The evolutionary scale team states that the differences between ESMGFP and its natural “relatives” are 500 million years of evolution. According to the ESM3 model, the characteristics of the protein are biologically plausible – as if nature had chosen this alternative path rather than what has been really followed. The results were published in A item in the scientific journal.
